Player Profile
A key part of Manchester United’s recent success, Evra has been arguably the best attacking left-back in Europe over the past few seasons. He made his international debut back in 2004 but was left out of the 2006 World Cup squad and started Euro 2008 as second choice behind Eric Abidal.
Born in Dakar, Senegal, he began his professional career in Italy’s lower leagues after being spotted in Les Ulis, the poor suburb of Paris where Thierry Henry grew up. He left Serie B side Monza in 2000 for Nice, who converted him from a left winger to left-back.
He moved to Monaco in 2002 and was a prominent member of the side that reached the 2004 Champions League final. Manchester United signed him in January 2006 and, despite a nightmare debut against Manchester City, he has become an integral part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s side.
Evra grew up in Dakar as one of 26 siblings. He started out as a centre-forward as a youth, before moving out to the left wing and finally full-back.
