Player profile

Once the enfant terrible of French football, Anelka has matured to become their most reliable striker. He has been a regular under coach Raymond Domenech since 2007 but, despite making his debut 12 years ago, will be playing in his first World Cup.

He was not selected for France 1998, Korea/Japan 2002 or Germany 2006, although he was part of France’s triumphant Euro 2000 squad and played a bit part at Euro 2008.

He hit 15 goals in 44 outings this season as Chelsea won a historic double, having joined them for a £15m fee in January 2008 to take his combined career transfer fees beyond the £85m mark, making him at one time the planet’s most expensive footballer in cumulative transfer fees (a record since broken by Cristiano Ronaldo).

He began his career at Paris St Germain before moving to Arsenal (1996-99, 500k), Real Madrid (1999-00, £22.9m), PSG (2000-02, £20m), Liverpool (2002, loan), Man City (2002-05, £12m), Fenerbahce (2005-06, £7m) and Bolton (2006-08, £8m).
