The highly-rated keeper started the World Cup qualifying campaign as second choice behind Steve Mandanda but will keep goal in South Africa, having started the final six qualifiers. He represented his country at Under-18, 19, 20 and 21 levels before making his senior debut in a 0-0 friendly draw against Uruguay in November 2008.
The 23-year-old won praise for his performances in the play-offs against Ireland, earning the nickname ‘Saint Lloris’ from the French media.
Lloris began his career with hometown club Nice and made his debut aged 18. After two full seasons as the club’s number one he turned down a move to AC Milan and instead signed for then-French champions Lyon in 2008.
Lloris was named Ligue 1’s goalkeeper of the year at the end of his first season and played an integral role in Lyon’s run to this year’s Champions League semi-finals. He won the European Under-19 Championship with France in 2005. Team-mates Abou Diaby and Yoann Gourcuff have also graduated to the senior side.
