Player Profile

The Barcelona left-back is favourite to partner William Gallas in the centre of France’s defence. He missed two months of the season with an adductor injury to his left leg but returned to help Barca win a second consecutive La Liga title.

Abidal made his France debut in Raymond Domenech’s first match in charge, was first-choice left-back at the 2006 World Cup and began Euro 2008 in the same role before being switched to centre of defence in the final group game against Italy, only to be sent off after 24 minutes.

Abidal began his career at Monaco, where he made his Champions League debut playing against Rangers in September 2000, and also had spells at Lille and Lyon before his £10m transfer to Barcelona – but he missed the 2009 Champions League final against Manchester United after picking up a red card in the semi-final against Chelsea.

Abidal has never scored a goal in his career, although he had the courage to put away a penalty in the World Cup final penalty shoot-out in 2006.
