France’s first-choice right-back played more minutes in qualifying than anyone else in the squad. Of Senegalese descent, Sagna represented France at the 2006 European Under-21 Championship before progressing to the senior team in 2007.
The Arsenal player missed out on Euro 2008 through injury but has since made the right-back slot his own. The 27-year-old has a frosty relationship with the French media, who he says criticised his decision to quit Ligue 1 for England.
He impressed during three seasons at Auxerre, helping the club win the French Cup in 2005, and was snapped up by Arsene Wenger in July 2007 for £7.5m and has been a consistent performer at the London club.
Named in the PFA team of the year after his debut season, Sagna was rewarded with a new contract running until 2014. He is the cousin of Stoke defender Ibrahima Sonko, though the pair only realised they were related in 2007.
