Player profile

A defensive midfielder who has often deployed alongside his namesake Lassana in front of the France back four, Diarra was part of the 2006 World Cup squad and came off the bench to replace Patrick Vieira in the final against Italy.

He signed for Bayern Munich at the age of 19 but after one Bundesliga game in three years he moved to Liverpool on a free transfer in 2002. Diarra failed to play a single game at Anfield and after loan spells at Le Havre, Bastia and Lens he was sold to Lens in 2005.

Following the 2006 World Cup, he was signed by Lyon, but despite winning the league title, his season was considered a disappointment and he was sold to Bordeaux in 2007, where he won a second league title in 2009.
