Player Profile
A powerful, rangy midfielder, Diaby replaced Patrick Vieira at Arsenal and was preferred to the Manchester City veteran for World Cup duty.
A former France Under-19 captain, he made his senior debut in March 2007 as a 90th-minute substitute against Lithuania but was not selected for Euro 2008.
A graduate of the famed Clairefontaine Academy, Diaby can play anywhere in midfield. He made his league debut for Auxerre aged 18, but had played just 10 league games in the French top flight before joining Arsenal for £2m in January 2006.
He has so far made 138 appearances for the Gunners and enjoyed his most consistent season at the Emirates in 2009/10, firing seven goals in 40 appearances.
The season did not start well for Diaby, however, when he accidentally broke Arsenal and France team-mate Samir Nasri’s leg in training.
