Player profile
In the last nine months, England’s vice-captain has struggled to replicate the explosive form that earned him the Football Writers’ Player of the Year award in 2009 and failed to make the PFA’s Premier League team of the year for the first time since 2003.
Gerrard often cut a forlorn figure in a season hampered by niggling thigh, groin and hip strains and his loyalty to Liverpool could be tested this summer by bids from clubs with Champions League football to offer, having almost left Anfield in the summer of 2006 following a £32m bid from Chelsea before a late change of mind.
He missed the 2002 World Cup after injuring his groin on the final day of the league season and four years later saw his penalty saved in the shoot-out defeat against Portugal - Gerrard has since scored 16 out of 19 penalties for Liverpool.
He captained his country for the first time against Sweden in March 2004, and led Liverpool to victory in the 2005 Champions League and 2006 FA Cup finals, scoring and playing a starring role in their stirring comebacks in both games.
Away from football, Gerrard recently teamed up with a local hotelier to buy his favourite restaurant in Southport.
