Having missed the cut in 2006, Wright-Phillips was a surprise inclusion in the squad ahead of Theo Walcott and Adam Johnson, the latter having restricted his playing time with Manchester City after joining the club from Middlesbrough.
Wright-Phillips only started half of City’s Premier League games in 2009/10 and, until the final day of the season, he had not completed a full 90 minutes in the league for five months.
He went public in March with his grievances about the club’s reluctance to give him the £25m contract that he wants - he has two years remaining on his reported £60,000-a-week deal, but has asked for a five-year contract with a hefty wage increase.
Having begun his career with the club, he moved to Chelsea for £21m in 2005, but 60 of his 125 appearances came from the bench and he rejoined City for £8.5m in August 2008.
Wright-Phillips scored 18 minutes into his England debut against Ukraine in August 2004. His dad, Ian Wright, needed eight games to score for his country and also never made the World Cup finals, with injury in 1998 denying him a certain place.
