Player Profile

Tottenham’s Player of the Year was drafted into the World Cup squad as a replacement for captain Rio Ferdinand, who was injured during England’s first training session in South Africa a week before the start of the tournament.

Dawson was one of the seven players cut from England’s provisional 30-man squad – his club manager Harry Redknapp claimed he was treated like a “ghost” during the pre-World Cup training camp in Austria - and he was busy trying to arrange a holiday when the call-up came from the team’s base in Rustenb uerg.

A former England Under-21 captain, Dawson had a superb season for Spurs, who he joined in 2005 after starting his career at Nottingham Forest, where he made 91 appearances for Forest despite a bout of glandular fever in 2003 which left him susceptible to injuries.

He was brought up in a small market town in north Yorkshire on the outskirts of Wensleydale, the valley best known for its cheese and made famous by Wallace and Gromit.
