Player Profile

Central defender Upson started four of England’s World Cup qualifiers because of injuries suffered by Rio Ferdinand or John Terry, having been recalled after a three-year absence for Fabio Capello’s first game in charge in February 2008.

Upson captained West Ham in 2009/10 - but has only one year left on his contract and has indicated that he would like to leave, with Spurs among those showing an interest in him.

He had an awful start to his West Ham career in January 2007 when he suffered a calf injury 28 minutes into his debut and played only another 12 minutes for the remainder of the season.

Upson made only one appearance for his first club Luton before joining Arsenal for £2m in 1997. He made 56 appearances for Arsenal, earning a Premier League winners’ medal in 2001/02, but a broken leg in February of that season ruled him out of the victorious FA Cup run.

He was subsequently loaned to Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace and Reading before a four-year spell at Birmingham from 2003.
