Hart was named in the PFA’s Team of the Year after an outstanding season on loan at Birmingham in which he kept 12 clean sheets. He has attracted interest from Arsenal but will get the chance to stake a first-team claim at Manchester City with Shay Given likely to miss the start of next season following shoulder surgery.
City were prevented from recalling Hart in April to cover Given’s absence as they had not inserted a release clause in the loan agreement with Birmingham.
He became the youngest England goalkeeper for half a century when he made his senior debut as a half-time substitute against Trinidad & Tobago in June 2008, aged 21 years and 43 days.
Last summer he helped the under-21 team reach the final of the European Championship, scoring with a penalty and saving one of Sweden’s in a semi-final shoot-out but then being suspended for the final against Germany after being booked for trying to put an opponent off as he prepared to take a spot-kick.
Hart became part of the Shrewsbury Town squad at the age of 15 when the club had to ask his head teacher for permission to take him out of class. He made his first-team debut the day after his 17th birthday and was an ever-present in 2005-06. He then joined Manchester City for an initial £600,000, rising to £1.5m, and made his debut in a 0-0 draw with Sheffield United in October 2006.
