Player profile

Milner’s full potential has been realised since being switched from Aston Villa’s right wing to central midfield by Martin O’Neill at the start of December. Tireless and tenacious, he ended the 2009/10 season with 11 goals and was named the PFA Young Player of the Year.

It was also the first time in his career he has started and finished a season under the same manager.

England coach Fabio Capello described Milner as “the future, my future” in 2008, eight months before giving him his first senior cap in a friendly against the Netherlands and he featured in every England game during the 209/10 season prior to the final World Cup warm-up friendly against Japan.

Milner, who made his Premier League debut for hometown club Leeds as a 16-year-old and two years later moved to Newcastle before joining Villa for a club record-equalling £12m in 2008, is one of the most versatile players in the squad and has played in both full-back positions and on the left wing under Capello.
