England qualified for South Africa with comparative ease which was a huge relief for a Football Association saddled with debt and a team who failed to make the European Championship two years ago under previous boss Steve McClaren. Much has been made of the turnaround engineered by coach Fabio Capello but he has taken England to the World Cup with largely the same group of players.
There is a concern that the team has come to rely on Wayne Rooney too heavily but Capello's methods of breathing confidence and discipline into a talented squad have given him the belief that they can make it to the final. There are some signs of aging in the centre of defence but Capello has made a habit of drafting in players from the U-21 squad which could unleash a few surprises.
