Comfortable at full-back or in midfield, Isla earned his first senior international cap in 2007 before he had even made his club debut. His heady promotion followed his impressive performances at the Under-20 World Cup in July of that year, when he played in all seven games as Chile finished third.
Isla also caught the attention of Udinese and he moved to Italy from the youth ranks at Chilean side Universidad Catolica. He has made 72 league appearances for Udinese in three seasons, including 27 starts in 2009/10.
Isla started his youth career as a forward but was soon moved to defence. He was used sparingly during the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign but his ability to play in numerous positions makes him a regular squad member.
