When Alves signed for Barcelona for the staggering sum of €35m (£29.1m) he was described by Barca chairman Joan Laporta as the “best right-back in the whole world”.
Despite that overwhelming pressure he has not disappointed, helping Barca to an unprecedented treble in the 2008/09 season, although he missed the final against Manchester United through suspension.
He arrived at the Nou Camp after six highly successful years at Sevilla in which he won the Copa Del Rey, the European Super Cup and the Uefa Cup twice. His bond with the club was so great he broke down in tears at a press conference when it was announced he was leaving the club.
His scintillating performances for Barcelona’s team of all-stars has not been enough to oust Maicon from Brazil’s right-back slot and he is mainly used an impact substitute.
He was born in Juazeiro, in the state of Bahia, and was part of the Brazilian side that won the Under-20 World Cup in Qatar, and earned a place in the team of the tournament.
His greatest moment in a Brazil shirt came in the final of the 2007 Copa America where he scored a goal in the 3-0 final win over bitter rivals Argentina.
He has acquired Spanish citizenship which allows him to bypass any non-EU quota restrictions.
