Player Profile
The defensive midfielder made his international debut in March, nearly a year after Algeria coach Rabah Saadane first tried to coax the France-born player into representing his father’s homeland.
Lacen had never set foot in Algeria when first approached and he insisted on visiting the country and gaining assurances that he would be accepted by the rest of the squad before accepting Saadane’s offer.
Born in a wealthy suburb of Paris to an Algerian father and Italian mother, Lacen played in the French Second Division for Stade Laval and Valence. Aged 21, he moved to Spain, first with Alaves and then Racing Santander in 2008. He scored the first league goal of his career on the opening day of the 2009/10 season, ending the campaign with three goals.
