Not first choice for his club but offers energy on the wing or up front for Algeria. Matmour made 20 league and cup starts for Bundesliga outfit Mönchengladbach in 2009/10, alongside USA midfielder and World Cup opponent Michael Bradley.
He played in Algeria’s first five games at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations in Angola, scoring his side’s first goal in the quarter-final against Ivory Coast with a powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area.
His first international goal came in the home win against Egypt in World Cup qualifying. Matmour said in April that Algeria have “unbelievable potential” and “could spring a surprise” this summer.
Matmour is another of the squad’s France-born contingent, having been raised in Strasbourg. He moved across the border aged 18 to join German Second Division Freiburg, for whom he scored 10 goals in 79 league games to earn a 2008 move to Mönchengladbach.
