Player Profile

Mesbah was one of six players given their debut in Algeria’s 3-0 defeat by the Republic of Ireland at the end of May. He played at left back, and was adjudged to have tripped Robbie Keane for the penalty that rounded off the scoring.

He is expected to be given an early chance to impress at the World Cup, with Nadir Belhadj suspended for the opening game. Like Belhadj, Mesbah can play anywhere on the left and he has the same attacking instinct.

Mesbah played in a variety of positions, from forward to defender, during the 2009/10 season as his first year with Italian club Lecce ended with promotion to Serie A as champions. He started 25 league and cup games, ending the campaign on the left wing.

He was born in Algeria but grew up in the French town of Annecy near the Swiss border. Mesbah spent his early professional career in the Swiss league, with Servette, Basel, Aarau and Lucerne. He moved to Italy on loan with Avellino for the bulk of the 2008/09 season but after their relegation from the Second Division he signed for Lecce. He is married to the sister of Fabrizio Zambrella, a player with Swiss club Sion.
