Laifaoui’s call-up was reward for his feverish dedication to improving his fitness in recent years. He was ignored for five years after his international debut until winning his second cap last August against Uruguay.
The central defender’s only involvement in the World Cup qualifying campaign was as a second-half substitute in the 2-0 loss to Egypt which forced a play-off. He started Algeria’s first two games at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations but was then dropped.
Laifaoui has spent his entire career in Algeria. Since joining Setif in 2007 he was won the Algerian league and Arab Champions League.
