Gerardo Martino has agreed to stay on as Paraguay coach until after the Copa America next year.

There had been speculation the 47-year-old Argentinian would step down after leading Paraguay into the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time.

"For me, it has been five months that the new contract has already been in order," said Martino.

"However, after the Copa America (hosted by Argentina) a cycle will come to an end and I will leave my post."

On Thursday, Paraguay's football federation (APF) had announced they would give Martino time to reflect on his future while he went on a three-week holiday.

"We would like him to stay on and we told him that, now the decision is up to him," APF president Juan Angel Napout said.

But Martino, a disciple of former Argentina and present Chile coach Marcelo Bielsa, has now committed himself to the job despite receiving several offers of alternative employment, including from clubs in Mexico, Chile and Saudi Arabia.

Paraguay lost their quarter-final clash against Spain 1-0.
