BBC pundits on England

Jermain Defoe

Highlights - Slovenia 0-1 England

England played really well for 75 minutes. The commitment was there, the skill was there, the enterprise was there, the creativity was there - they just passed the ball better.

After the goal - and what a good goal it was - they could have scored five or six quite easily.

Jermain Defoe did very well. He brings variation to the side and keeps defenders guessing with his pace and sharpness.

Take the goal. The defender did not know which way to go and Jermain - bang - moves brilliantly, gets ahead of his marker and gets the goal. Brilliant.

I loved the reaction of the players and the manager at the end. There has been talk about factions in the group and so on - but one good result brings everyone together so fast.

After our first two performances, we will certainly settle for second in the group and progression to the last 16.

England played with a lot more freedom. There was more of a spring in their step, they passed the ball better and created chances.

If there was a negative, it was that we should have finished them off sooner. But there are big positives to come out of this win. It was a much, much better performance.

In England, we are either brilliant or we are rubbish. Now we're going to win the World Cup, aren't we?

A weight will have been lifted off the manager's shoulders and the confidence will breathe through the squad now.

England came here to qualify - and they have done that. They had two lousy games, but they have done what they had to and got through to the last 16. Well done.

It is Germany next, but so what? Listen boys, you have qualified. It is your chance to beat them. Let's get out and do it.

It was a good performance. In fact, when you consider what came before it, you have to say it was a great performance. Up until now, England have played poorly.

We will have a reality check later, I am sure, but let's enjoy it for now. We have qualified.

We set out to win the group because it wasn't a particularly strong line-up. We have not done that, but at least we got through.

We said before the tournament began that we thought James Milner would play a big role in this World Cup. He has been ill, but now he is fit and firing again. We saw him back to his best.

England were very, very, very good. They created so many chances. It is a completely different team than the one we saw in the first two games. That's far more like it.

You have to give credit to the manager. Fabio Capello has got a performance out of his team, which is the most important thing.

What I loved is that they played like it was a Premier League game. They pressed and they pressed, they harried, they passed the ball sensibly, they got balls in the box and they had great width from Milner, who was outstanding.

England could have won that game twice over, let's be honest. England deserve to go through, there's no doubt about that.

I think they've played all right. For the first 15 minutes they looked edgy - just like they did against Algeria.

But they got the goal, which lifted them, and played some nice stuff after that. They created a lot of chances against a decent Slovenia team and that will give them confidence going into the last 16.

Against Germany, England will at last face a team who will come at them, create chances and have a go at the back four.
