World Cup match-day 2: Garth Crooks' team of the day

Garth Crooks

BBC football reporter and Score pundit

Feels like the Fifa 2010 World Cup finals are really up and running now, especially after England's opening match.

Here's my top picks from Saturday:

Vincent Enyeama
VINCENT ENYEAMA (goalkeeper)

He saved Nigeria's blushes. It could have been six for Argentina.

Glen Johnson
GLEN JOHNSON (right-back)

Competent display from the Liverpool defender.

Walter Samuel
WALTER SAMUEL (centre-back)

He looked formidable at the back for Argentina.

Lee Jung-soo
LEE JUNG-SOO (centre-back)
South Korea

Kept a clean sheet and tapped in unmarked to open the scoring with a striker's finish.

Gabriel Heinze
GABRIEL HEINZE (left-back)

As always, great on set plays. Always prepared to attack the ball. Perhaps Manchester United would have won the title if they'd still had him!

Park Ji-sung
PARK JI-SUNG (midfield)
South Korea

'Three-lung Park' (as Manchester United fans call him) scored the kind of goal befitting the world stage.

Landon Donovan
United States

The US captain led by example.

England's Steven Gerrard

England captain tried to lead by example.

Argentina's Javier Mascherano

Sensible, disciplined and controlled.

Lionel Messi
LIONEL MESSI (striker)

Seemed to spend 90% of the match with the ball tied to his foot. A goal would have crowned a superb performance.

Carlos Tevez
CARLOS TEVEZ (striker)

On a day that wasn't blessed with great striking performances, he produced a co-starring act with Messi.
