Paul Robinson's World Cup omission angers Sam Allardyce

Paul Robinson
Robinson has won 41 international caps

Blackburn boss Sam Allardyce has accused Fabio Capello of omitting Paul Robinson from his preliminary World Cup squad for personal reasons.

England coach Capello named goalkeepers David James, Rob Green and Joe Hart ahead of Blackburn's Robinson.

Allardyce told BBC Radio Lancashire: "He's made the biggest mistake of his selection process.

"There has to be other reasons why he's not been chosen because he's said that people in form will be selected."

Allardyce added: "There is nobody in better form than Paul Robinson.

"Perhaps Joe Hart can run him close but he hasn't got 41 international caps of experience and hasn't played in major championships before.

"If you look at his form for Rovers, there has not been a better goalkeeper who has been so consistent. Thirteen clean sheets speaks for itself, there's nobody in better form."

Former Leeds and Tottenham keeper Robinson played all five of England's games at the 2006 World Cup finals, keeping four clean sheets.

But he fell out of favour after losing form for Spurs and making a string of errors in the Euro 2008 qualification campaign. He has yet to play a game under Capello.

"As much as I respect him [Capello] for what he has done that is one big, big mistake.

"Perhaps 'Harty' [Joe Hart] can run him close but he hasn't got 40-odd England caps of experience and hasn't played in any major championships before.

"So it would be much more valuable having Paul Robinson there than it would be to have Joe Hart - never mind the David James scenario, who is spasmodically in and out because it seems he has a bit of an injury problem."

Portsmouth's keeper James has 49 international caps, while West Ham's Green has nine.

Manchester City's Hart, who spent the past Premier League season at Birmingham on loan, has gained just one England cap, after he appeared in a friendly match against Trinidad and Tobago in 2008.
