Lampard ready for attacking role
England midfielder Frank Lampard
Lampard is renowned for his goals from midfield
England's Frank Lampard believes a five-man midfield would give him and Steven Gerrard the chance to utilise their attacking strengths.

The midfield duo could be used in a more advanced position in the absence of striker Wayne Rooney.

And Lampard said: "That might give us both the opportunity to push up. It depends how we play.

"These are all pros and cons for the manager to weigh up and realise the best way forward."

England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has hinted at the prospect of using Gerrard in the hole behind a sole striker as a replacement for Rooney.

Gerrard has occasionally played in that position for Liverpool and has stated he would be willing to occupy such a role.

If Eriksson did choose a 4-5-1 formation that is likely to open the door for the likes of Michael Carrick and Owen Hargreaves to take up a place as a holding midfielder.

Lampard added: "A holding midfielder would give us insurance but it would mean not having as many bodies up front and you need the right personnel up front as well."

I can promise everyone that I'm feeling fresh, fine and raring to go

Gerrard was suffering badly from cramp during Liverpool's win over West Ham in the FA Cup final but he insists he has no fitness worries heading into the World Cup.

He said: "I've played a lot of games and a lot of football this season but I don't feel tired.

"I know a lot of people are saying 'he's played a lot of football' and 'will he or won't he be tired?'

"I can promise everyone that I'm feeling fresh, fine and raring to go."

Meanwhile, Trinidad and Tobago captain Dwight Yorke believes that England have enough goalscorers to compensate for the injured Rooney.

Rooney will definitely miss England's group games - after a scan revealed his fractured foot has yet to heal.

But Yorke told BBC Radio Five: "England have talent throughout the team.

"Michael Owen has proved his critics wrong before, Steven Gerrard is at the top of his game and Frank Lampard's goal tally is in double figures."

We just want to make sure we give a good account of ourselves

Dwight Yorke on Trinidad & Tobago

Yorke added: "There is also John Terry who comes from the back and gets his fair share of goals."

The 34-year-old plays for Sydney FC in Australia but had been training with Manchester United after his club season finished in March.

Trinidad and Tobago play England in Nuremberg on 15 June, but striker Yorke said coach Leo Beenhakker's side were more concerned with their opening group game against Sweden five days earlier.

Yorke said: "We're a small country of 1.3m and this is a historical moment for the players and the people.

"It's an exciting prospect coming up against England, but right now our main effort is to watch Sweden.

"As much as England is the team you want to play and beat, it is Sweden we are concentrating on as part of the bigger picture.

"We don't want to get ahead of ourselves. We just want to make sure we give a good account of ourselves."
