Yes I'm gutted, distraught and close to tears. But most of all, I'm proud. The lads played their hearts out, and hats off to them for that.

1850: Kellster71
Congratualtions to SGE for bringing on Carragher for penalties. I've never seen him take them before, not even in the Euro final. The last decison in a very long line of them. Good to see Walcott worked out as well.

1847: Bluevaio
Ahhh same ole story for England. Being a neutral I think England deserved to win...but Portugal kept their cool. Feel sorry Hargreaves

1845: Madflava
Oh God, this is horrible, Stevie G and Lampard messed up. We had it but let it slip away.

1834: Majesticmania we go!!!! GOOD LUCK ENGLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1830: Itsamessi
As a neutral I hope England can do it. They have done very well with ten men. Portugal had nothing with their subs and extra man

1828: LFC Forever
PK's... 5-4 to us... Ronaldo to blaze it over the bar on the last open for them would be amazing

1824: Mainstay
The dreaded penalties loom

1820: Cardsfan
Sometimes I forget England are a man down. Hargreaves and Lennon have been fantastic and have made up a man by themselves

1816: Ryan
I can't take much more of this

1815: Releesethehounds
Great tackle!! And fair play to Lennon for not asking for it

1811: Supersmooth83
Listen to the England fans for heavens sake and all their support!

1807: Kobashi05
As soon as England went down to 10 Scholari should of put 2 up front and used 2 wide men to strecth England. Scholari made some errors

1800: 4Really
England are definately playing for penalties or hoping for the lucky breakaway goal, these guys are playing with 7-8 guys in their 18 yard box

1753: GFTN
Got to say my MOTM is definitely Owen Hargreaves. I bet he's earned a lot of admirers today. He's given 110% the whole match. I don't care about his accent, the boy done good

1751: Ryan
At last England show some passion

1749: 2001Oysters
We've been total crap technically from the 15 minute-mark onwards, but I'm actually more pleased with this performance than any other. The second half has been the first time England have shown real heart and passion

1744: Mainstay
Portugal look happy to go to extra time, don't understand that

1742: Tiger_soup
Come on you England midfielders... show us what you got... no Rooney to bang it in but you got Crouch your main goalscorer... make it count! I just can't see Portugal scoring a field goal

1738: Objectif
I'm a neutral Scot, not normally quick to defend an Englishman, but there's no way the ref could be sure that Rooney deliberately stamped. He was swayed by the Portuguese posse

1732: Banditdan
If nothing else its opened the game up...

1731: 4Really
Crouch is so comical to look at but he's got good touch

1727: Heffersatwork
Cole off and Gerrard moved out to the left - what is Eriksson up to? He should've taken Lampard off and kept the two genuine wide men on to try and get some crosses in to Crouch.

1724: Itsamessi
Need a reargard action from the team now and a bit of kamikaze!!

1720: Maninthailand
With Ronaldo getting involved in getting Rooney sent off, what's the odds on them not getting on well come the league start?

1717: Toony-From Toon
Lennon is making things happen already!

1715: 4Really
Tears of Beckham, what a sight for unsympathetic eyes

1709: Guy_Kewney
This is it. Beckham has been England's problem

1700: TC Birkdale
We need to go to 4-4-2...bring Crouch on, and put Lennon on the right of the midfield diamond. We can take off Lampard and Beckham and not miss them....

1654: Googzie
Owen Hargreaves has been breaking up lots of Portugal's play. Becks looks lost in the match. Cristiano Ronaldo has been the best player on the pitch so far.

1650: Curtinman
Not quite as boring as England's previous games . Pretty even - how about some fireworks

1647: Makelele6
I think some people are being over-dramatic its still 0-0 and we've got more options to come from our bench

1644: Pointofblue
In fairness, Portugal don't look any better than us, though possession wise they're starting to dominate. We're getting down the wings, but there's no one in the box!

1637: 2001Oysters
Started promisingly, but Ferdinand has messed up England's rhythm and build-up play with his constant long balls yet again

1632: SYLGG
John Terry should not have been booked for that

1625: dave_bloggs
Heh...Hargreaves.. blinder.. he's having none of it is he? Beckham is anonymous

1622: Ryan
Better football but we need a goalscorer

1616: Makelele6
Portugal are passing and moving well and closing england down well. England look good on the counter

1612: Abc
The england fans sound brilliant, giving the guys good support. COME ON ENGLAND!

1552: Englanermy
Good luck to You England and I hope you win this match! Mark (Germany)

1535: Komebak_Kingz
I reckon the 5 in midfield and the lone striker is the way we HAVE to play. That way we're not out numbered in midfield and we can pass along the floor, instead of just hoofin it all the time.

It means that, fair enough, Rooney is by himself but that way we get the best of BOTH Gerrard and Lampard attacking, and they can still offer him support. Games are won and lost in midfield, and getting the best from our midfielders is far more important than the attack.

I think if we can master playing the 4-1-4-1 (or whatever it is) system, we've got this in the bag. COME ON LADS!!!

1523: Edabove
Im in Spain. Getting ready to watch the game. I'm not too nervous at the moment as I'm confident we can do it. Also after living here for 3 years its my first world cup outside of England. Although i remember i was here for the Rugby WC final. So I hope Ill be shouting and enjoying the same feelings! COME ON ENGLAND!!!

1517: Rivaldo_9
The long balls wont work today and i hope England play one up front. Rooney looked good up there by himself

1510: VaFaNapoli
I hope England play good soccer, you have some fine players but have not impressed so far. Try to pass the ball a lot, shoot at goal (not Lampard), don't dive so much (especially Terry!)

1403: Fowlergod11
Is anyone watching this game in Benin, in West Africa? This is not the time or place to be so far away from home - I've been listening to New Order, 'World In Motion' on my mini disc all morning as my only source of patriotic comfort. I'm watching it with a bunch of French guys so cant wait to see us get through and the Brazilians to knock them out - what a night it will be! 2-0, Stevie G brace! Come on England!

1351: Whirled
Melbourne,Australia 10:43pm..about 2 and a half hours to kick off...Nervous?..Of course!...There are many advantages for your average Pom living in Australia...Weather,women,alcohol by the bucketful...But being so far away from the action just makes me feel the nerves more,it's as if I were there I could somehow influence something....Anyway "Come on lads,do us Proud"..England Expects etc....and finally I DO NOT want to hear anything that sounds remotely like "Gareth Southgate the whole of England is with you"..

1305: Madcatuk
We are in Luxembourg. If we get through we will all try and see the next match in Germany. The England flags are flying on all the UK cars as there are a lot of us who work over here.

1243: Darth Roeder NUFC
Im so nervous for the match! I live in Switzerland and there are so many Portuguese it's insane, everytime they have won a match this World Cup, the streets get flooded with them. I hope today is different, i think England will turn it on, even though im nervous i think we will win 2-1, Rooney and Beckham for England. Come on England !

1215: JoycesInNebraska
We'll be watching the game from Bellevue, Nebraska. A 10am kick-off here. I have England to win it - 3-1, with Rooney, Gerrard and Lampard all coming good and scoring

1209: banditdan66
I will be watching the match from the USA, Tacoma (near Seattle). This is the first time I have been outside of England during a major Football tournament but that is not dampening my enthusiasm. It is currently 3.44am, the match starts here at 8am. I cannot sleep, I am so excited, my nerves are in tatters and the locals already think I am nuts after my screaming and hollering during our previous matches. Come on boys, do me proud!

1105: KomebaK_Kingz
I'll be at work all day! Came in at 8 o'clock so I can leave at 4 and catch most of the match. Can't wait - I reckon Rooney is going to light the match on fire and prove to be the difference between the two

1050: CrunchtimeMcWin
I feel totally confident England will win, and have done since they were pegged against Portugal. I've no idea why, although our previous encounters with them have been so close I feel its our turn to triumph, unless the referee puts a spanner in the works. I bet I don't feel so confident in a few hours time though!

1037: Top_of_the_lane
Rooney will score a hat-trick and England will face France in the next round - you'll see

1032: ozvillain
I'm going to be watching down under in Sydney, Australia, am far too excited already, trying to pace myself so I don't fall asleep at 11pm. GO ENGLAND! I have a good feeling about today's match

1023: Leo27
I'm Portuguese and I'm working too (in Luanda) but a the time of the game, I will stop working and see the match

1020: captainbluemeanie
I woke up to a beautiful, sunny day here in Germany - put on my England shirt and have been scouring the net for all the match build up. I'm so excited I can't really concentrate. Probably gonna watch it on the big screen - the town here is slowly waking up after the German madness last night. Lots of hangovers I think!

1018: banditdan66
Everything is pointing the way to an England v Germany final, only Portugal and Brazil in the way, just small hurdles when you're racing for the BIGGEST prize in Football

1010: Reverend Green
Moving House. Have just arrived back to Kent after an eight year spell in Ireland. Hopefully it will be a day to remember. Come on England, time to fire on all cylinders.
