Portugal 2-0 Iran
Saturday, 17 June 2006

This is what 606 message board users and viewers that sent their text messages had to say on the game.

1645: silvios
When it comes to individual technical skills Portugal's players - like many other players taking part in the tournament - are superior to England's players.

1640: floridaRoberto62
I think Portugal could go very far.

1631: Jamming With Edward
Ronaldo had a good game today and he WILL get better. Second half he improved a lot in terms of when to do tricks/flicks and when to keep it nice and simple.

1619: Adam
Portugal are the only big team in this tournament, apart from France, who haven't played better than England so far.

1616: Sevilson
Ronaldo created more chances today than all the England side in the last game. And comparing England's game to Portugal's is just dreaming. Portugal have been playing much better than England. Portugal can do much better - don't know about England though.

1611: The-Kop-Prophet
Portugal got out of jail due to a moment of brilliance by Deco. I'm not sure Figo was touched for the penalty. The defender looked like he pulled out at the last minute on slo-mo and Figo just went down!

1608: Culloden Crow
I'm glad Scolari's not England manager.

1554: The Pain
Most impressive player: Costinha. Portugal's creative players didn't shine as much as they should have done.

1545: biskot
Tough call there on Figo. Replays show some marginal contact was made. I can't decide, but he made a meal of it.

1542: paolo
Figo should have been booked for that dive.

1539: Iranpool FC
Figo confirmed his place as the best diver in the world. He should maybe consider going into Olympic diving and maybe take Ronaldo with him. I'm so bitter now - at least 1-0 would have been a decent result for Iran.

1533: tiger_soup
The referee is ridiculous in this match. He should be fired.

1530: berlinboy
So much for this being the World Cup where refs clamp down on diving and play-acting. Ronaldo just took a ridiculous dive. Yellow card for diving? Nope - the usual freekick for the diver!

1527: Googzie
This tournament is producing some really great goals. That's what the World Cup should be about - the best players in the world producing breathtaking football.

1524: James
I hope this won't be another 1-0 game. It would be nice for Iran to win.

1522: Gavi19
Another great goal in the tournament from one of the stars.

1519: jd_106
I think we are really starting to see just how tactically adept the "lesser" sides in this World Cup are. Well done to the likes of Trinidad and Tobago, Angola and Iran.

1511: biskot
Watching this match is excruciatingly painful. Is this the Portugal some tipped among the favourites? They look a pale shadow of the team from the first match. It still beats me why any coach would play Ronaldo anywhere.

1505: ntowghi
Ronaldo is a one-trick pony! He doesn't understand that if there is defender that he cannot outrun he is better off making a quick pass.

1457: The Pain
A bit more urgency is needed from Portugal. Maniche is looking off the pace and Deco isn't getting enough of the ball.

1448: floridaRoberto62
There is no denying that Iran are playing their best. I still predict a 1-0 victory for Portugal.

1446: tiger_soup
Portugal definitely need Scolari's famous motivating.

1443: J
Iran appear to be stubborn opposition and there's a pattern forming with lesser teams performing well - Angola for example.

Hashemian the Iran number 9 is making all the right runs.

1440: Paul
Ronaldo is trying to be too fancy for his own good. Give him his own ball.

1435: Comsta
Not a single good ball been played into the Iranian box so far, despite an almost constant flow of Portuguese attack. For a team with Figo, Ronaldo and Deco, they really should be delivering good corners at the very least.

1434: Nigel
Portugal I think will improve in the second half. It's only a matter of time before Iran break down.

How irritating is Ronaldo? If I were a manager I'd be so frustrated.

1428: paolo1524
Has anyone noticed that the Portugal tops have 'Portugal v Iraq' on them or is it me not paying attention?

Deco is fab. Who's better, Riquelme or Deco?

1416: tiger_soup
Figo's distribution is just fantastic - if only his team-mates made it count.

1412: David
Deco went close there. What a great save.

1352: tiger_soup
I hope Ronaldo comes out of his schoolboy obession with his footwork and plays more the team. That will really help Portugal's cause.

1350: marvmau
I expect Portugal will give a much improved performance right from the start. With Deco back, the ball should move around more fluently.

1339: The Pain
The Portugal team is very similar to the one that played at Euro 2004. Most of the European nations have changed at least three of their players since then but Portugal have stuck with continuity.

1337: 606_upside_down_909
I'm hoping for goals. We couldn't do much against Angola, but I wouldn't be surprised if we are made to sweat for the win.

1336: super-wightman
I hope Iran win just to keep the group wide open!

1330: The Pain
The return of Deco should help to freshen the Portugal side up. Should be straightforward but Portugal have been known to struggle against the smaller sides over the years. Hopefully Pauleta can get in amongst the goals today. No-one's taken a firm grip on the Golden Boot award as yet so maybe a chance for Pauleta today.

1328: Otranto
I'm hoping for a cracking game. Lots of goals wouldn't go amiss and to be honest I don't care who scores them. I think the score will be 4-3 to Portugal.

1320: leeds_for_promotion
I Predict a 2-0 win for Portugal - Figo and Maniche to score.
