Australia 3-1 Japan
Monday, 12 June 2006

1558: chelseainaus
Our defence needs sorting out still but it was a good win largely down to superior fitness and a good tactical switch.

1555: princecorner_kick
That's why Hiddink should have been given the England job!! Knows when to change the tactics of a game and most importantly adapt the right tactics, whereas Sven just does some random thing

1552: OZZY_LFC
Fantastic resolve by Australia. They really deserved that win. Australia to beat Croatia and lose to Brazil but to go through to the next round.

1548: Colonel Red
The substitutes have really made the difference for Australia, Perhaps Guus Hiddink could give Sven a few pointers on how they work! It's no more than the Aussies deserve.

1542: slaterslovechild
There was no controversy about Tim Cahill's goal!

1535: Cold War Kid
It's all Australia now, but you have to give credit to the Japanese defence. They've hardly put a foot wrong all game.

1528: The Pain
Aussies are wilting, as I'd thought they would given how much energy they used up in the 1st half. They've still got the spirit to summon up an equaliser out of nowhere though. Japan looking the more fresher, especially their wide men

1516: doodle dandy
Australia have got to get more crosses into Tim Cahill now he's on. He's a cracking header of the ball.

1508: Besonders
Keep going Oz. But mind the heat! It's 28C (82F) in the shade now, and probably worse in the sun. Slip slop slap, lads!

1444: depthsheights
Well as we can all see, the result of a terrible decision and subsequent ones, cards are flying. We may see a penalty today. A red seems inevitable.

1431: 729 - Pomponian and Proud
How can there be any complaint over that goal? The only reason the forward collided with Schwarzer is that he was barged over by Craig Moore. I suppose technically it was a penalty but the ref was right to allow the advantage.

1428: meath_hammer
That goal never should have stood, an awful decision by the referee. Schwarzer was clearly jumped into. And up till then both keepers have been overly protected.

1422: Colonel Red
I think the Australian side will need Mark Viduka to have one of those days we all know he his is capable of and the same could be said of Harry Kewell.

1418: The Pain
Both teams are using a lot of energy in this half. Almost end-to-end football taking place. Can expect it to be a slow and uninteresting 2nd half if they carry on like this in this heat.

1358: Hiro_Nagoya
Japan's starting line-up is no surprise. This is the best formation, we should be able to win against Australia. Come on Japan! Ganbare Nippon!

1332: rmerrill
Been very much looking forward to this match. Japan play very attractive football, and Australia will be very motivated in their first appearance in over 30 years. With both teams feeling like they need a win in this match to advance, it should be one of the best matches of the opening round.

1326: MystStreamer (SUMMERTIME!!)
Japan have got a good record against the Aussies, last three games all won with no goals conceded, so I fancy Japan for this. Narrow 1-0 to Japan.

1318: wondrousrm1
It should be a close game. Here's hoping Australia 1-0.
