FULL-TIME: Two-goal Tomas Rosicky inspires the Czech Republic to a comfortable 3-0 victory against a lacklustre USA. The rest of the world will have sat up and taken notice.

88 mins: Zdenek Grygera becomes the fourth Czech player to go in the book, although it has not been a particularly physical game.

86 mins: Czech hero Tomas Rosicky is substituted to a crescendo of cheers. He is replaced by Jiri Stajner.

84 mins: "The Czech Republic are as good as anyone I've seen going forward at the World Cup so far - Tomas Rosicky is a Roll's Royce player. The USA have been a bit disappointing - they haven't seemed able to up the tempo at all."
Gavin Peacock, BBC expert.

82 mins: Karel Poborsky is replaced by Jan Polak.

81 mins: Two-goal hero Tomas Rosicky blots his copybook by getting his name taken for a needless foul on Oguchi Onyewu.

80 mins: Eddie Johnson, the USA'S sharpest striker by a country mile, sees his shot nestle into the netting at the top of the goal.

77 mins: Josh Wolff comes on for Brian McBride in a bid to a bite into the USA's attack.

76 mins: GOAL USA 0-3 Czech Republic
Tomas Rosicky puts the result beyond doubt with his second of the game - and it's another beauty, this time a delicate lofted finish with the outside of the right foot. No prizes for guessing who put him through - that man Pavel Nedved.

74 mins: Bobby Convey dinks in a dangerous ball into the area but Petr Cech is just able to whip the ball off the lively Eddie Johnson's toes.

69 mins: US substitute Eddie Johnson smashes in a left foot shot but sees his effort go agonisingly wide, with Petr Cech well beaten.

67 mins: Goalscorer Tomas Rosicky nearly doubles his tally with an exquisite chip from outside the area which grazes the bar. Arsenal fans could be in for a treat next season.

65 mins: "The Czech Republic will just knock the ball around now and try to keep possession - if they can do that the Americans will tire very quickly."
BBC expert Gavin Peacock.

61 mins: Karel Poborsky hooks a spectacular volley over from a tight angle. For a brief second you thought he was going to eclipse THAT goal from Euro 96.

60 mins: Vratislav Lokvenc is put through by Karel Poborsky but is distracted by the close attentions of Eddie Lewis and Kasey Keller saves comfortably.

59 mins: Another booking. This time there can be no doubt as Claudio Reyna chops down Jaroslav Plasil right under the nose of the referee.

58 mins: Vratislav Lokvenc is shown a yellow card for the slightest of pushes on a more vertically-challenged opponent. Peter Crouch will no doubt sympathise.

52 mins: Pavel Nedved is brought down twice in quick succession, by Eddie Johnson and Claudio Reyna, as the USA resort to strong-arm tactics in a bid to snaffle out his threat.

49 mins: Tomas Ujfalusi goes within a whisker of putting the Czech Republic 3-0 up, but his header whistles post the far post, following a searching cross from veteran midfielder Karel Poborsky.

48 mins: "Bruce Arena has changed his system, switching to three at the back, with two up front which should give the USA more options."
Gavin Peacock, BBC expert.

48 mins: Reading's Bobby Convey flashes the ball across the Czech penalty area but the USA can't get anyone on the end of it.

46 mins:Double substitution for the USA as they attempt to claw their way back into the game - off go Pablo Mastroeni and Steve Cherundolo, to be replaced by Eddie Johnson and John O'Brien.

PLAYER-RATER: Jan Koller surprisingly leads the way with 8.07 ahead of Czech playmaker Pavel Nedved, who is neck-and-neck with Tomas Rosicky.

"It is magnificent centre-forward play by Jan Koller for the first goal. His movement is brilliant, because he goes to the near post then pulls away to fool the defenders. As for the injury, it looks a bad one - if it's as bad as it looks, that is a six-week recovery and he is out of the World Cup."
BBC pundit Alan Shearer.

HALF-TIME: Goals from Jan Koller and Tomas Rosicky gives the Czechs a 2-0 lead, but the edge is slightly taken off by the injury to Koller.

41 mins: Striker Jan Koller goes down clutching his hamstring, leading to frantic hand-waving on the Czech bench. He is carried off on a stretcher and replaced by Vratislav Lokvenc.

39 mins: "Pavel Nedved hasn't got blistering pace but his movement is so clever and I don't think the USA know how to handle him."
Gavin Peacock, BBC expert.

36 mins: GOAL USA 0-2 Czech Republic
Arsenal new boy Tomas Rosicky scores the goal of the tournament so far, a scorching 30-yarder that flies past Kasey Keller into the top corner, putting the Czechs firmly in the driving seat. The hugely impressive Pavel Nedved is again involved in the build-up.

31 mins: Pavel Nedved, who has been the star of the show in the first half, works his way to the byline once more and Leeds defender Eddie Lewis does well to clear his lines.

27 mins: Claudio Reyna strikes the post for the USA with a cracking low shot from the edge of the box. Petr Cech is well beaten and relieved to see the ball bounce harmlessly away.

25 mins: "The Czechs have shown they are capable of moving up a gear with their quick passing movement but the USA don't seem to be able to do that at the moment."
Gavin Peacock BBC expert.

23 mins: Pavel Nedved gets to the byline and floats in a teasing cross but Zdenek Grygera cannot keep his header down and the ball flies into the crowd behind the goal.

21 mins: Another promising move by the United States. Claudio Reyna puts a ball into the middle of a crowded penalty area, but none of his team-mates are anywhere near it.

19 mins: "The USA are lacking that bit of invention in the final third. They're playing in the World Cup now and you need to find that little bit extra."
Gavin Peacock, BBC expert.

16 mins: Landon Donovan charges towards goal and has his heels clipped by David Rozenhal, who earns a yellow card. The Americans again fail to take advantage with the free kick wasted.

14 mins: The USA are seeing plenty of the ball but lack the killer pass to put the Czechs in trouble.

10 mins: Bobby Convey puts the ball in the area, but it's an easy take for Petr Cech. Back come the USA and win a corner as Tomas Ujfalusi hurriedly clears his lines. Sadly for the Americans it comes to nothing.

5 mins: GOAL USA 0-1 Czech Republic
Zdenek Grygera bursts down the right and his pinpoint cross is a gift for 6ft 7ins striker Jan Koller to nod in.

4 mins: Pavel Nedved is brought down by Oguchi Onyewu, who earns a yellow card for his troubles. The resultant free kick comes to nothing.

1 min: The game kicks off in Gelsenkirchen.

1654 BST: A big cheer goes around the stadium as the United States anthem strikes up. The USA players, to a man, have their right hands pressed firmly to their chests as they belt out the words. Coach Bruce Arena has a visible lump in his throat.

The Czech Republic anthem, 'Where Is My Home?', is a more sombre affair and only half the players choose to sing along.

1649 BST: "Brian McBride is very powerful, very tough to knock off the ball. He relies, like all good strikers, on decent service and will be looking for good crosses from the two wingers."
Alan Shearer, BBC pundit.

1648 BST: "Tomas Rosicky is a very good player and will be wanting to show what he can do for Arsenal in the Premiership next season."
Leonardo, BBC pundit.

1642 BST: This is the Czech Republic's first appearance at a World Cup. In the last World Cup finals they reached as Czechoslovakia in 1990, they opened their campaign with a 5-1 win over the USA. More of the same would do nicely for coach Karel Bruckner.

1640 BST: "This is Pavel Nedved's first ever game in the World Cup finals, at the age of 33, while Claudio Reyna and Kasey Keller for the USA are in their fourth tournament."
Ian Brown, BBC Five Live Sport.

1620 BST: "The Czechs will have to shuffle their pack a little bit because of Milan Baros' absence, pushing new Arsenal signing Tomas Rosicky further forward and bringing Jaroslav Plasil into midfield.

"The Czech squad are getting on a bit now and many people feel this could be their last chance of glory with their current crop of players, as many are over 30.

"You just wonder whether they will cope with the heat and humidity in this stadium or whether the superior fitness of this very well organised and disciplined USA side will shine through on the day."
Jimmy Armfield, BBC Five Live Sport.

1609 BST: The Czech Republic have been dealt a blow with the news that striker Milan Baros is out of the side to play the United States in Monday's Group E opener because of a long-standing foot injury.

The Aston Villa star has hardly trained in the last week and has been named on the bench, with Jan Koller starting the game as the Czechs' lone striker.

For the USA, Landon Donovan will play just behind Fulham's Brian McBride up front.
