PLAYER RATER: Not surprisingly, Portugal goalscorers Deco and Cristiano Ronaldo lead the user-generated ratings with scores of 8.5 out of 10 at the final whistle. But there are similar marks for Iran's Vahid Hashemian and defiant goalkeeper Ebrahim Mirzapour.

"The way Portugal played, yes they ground it out in the end, but on this form, they are not candidates to win it."
Former Brazil player Leonardo, BBC Sport

"Portugal weren't fantastically convincing but always looked better than Iran. They did enough, now top the group and will be looking to build on this result."
Former England international Danny Mills, BBC Five Live Sport

FULL-TIME: Portugal go through to the last 16 and qualify from the group stage for the first time since 1966. Iran are eliminated.

90 mins + 4: Portugal are pressing for a third goal and Cristiano Ronaldo gets the ball in the back of the net but he is judged offside.

90 mins + 3: Pauleta has a late chance to make it 3-0 for Portugal but his right-footed shot is edged over the line to safety.

90 mins + 2: Iran are determined not to give up and pour forward but Javan Nekounam is smothered and Portugal clear.

90 mins + 1: Simao Sabrosa plays a short corner to Armando Petit as Portugal play down the minutes, assured of their place in the last 16 if they hold onto their lead.

90 mins: There are five minutes of injury-time signalled and Portugal seem set to whittle down the clock.

88 mins: A lively looking Cristiano Ronaldo sends his left-footed shot into the side netting as Portugal continue to dominate.

87 mins: Portugal captain Luis Figo receives huge applause as he leaves the field to be replaced by Simao Sabrosa.

85 mins: Yahya Golmohammadi smacks into Cristiano Ronaldo and the Iran player receives treatment on the pitch with a shoulder injury. As he hobbles off in pain, Golmohammadi is shown a yellow card too.

80 mins: The match looks certain to go Portugal's way down as Iran's spirit seems to have faded. Deco is replaced by Tiago

PLAYER RATER: There seemed little doubt in referee Eric Poulat's mind to award the penalty, though nearly one in four users immediately claim it was the wrong decision.

78 mins: GOAL Portugal 2-0 Iran
Yahya Golmohammadi brings down Portugal captain Luis Figo on the edge of the box. Cristiano Ronaldo coolly steps up for the penalty and drives it home cleanly to stretch Portugal's lead. Luiz Felipe Scolari punches the air in delight as Ronaldo sinks to his knees.

76 mins: Ferydoon Zandi steps up to take a free-kick for Iran from a promising possession just left of the box. But the substitute only succeeds in battering the ball into the wall.

PLAYER RATER: 60% of BBC viewers believe Deco would warrant a place in Brazil's midfield, following Gary Lineker's suggestion to Leonardo that the Brazilian-born player could play for Brazil.

73 mins: Iran know their World Cup will be over unless they can find an equaliser. Mehdi Mahdavikia tries to weave his way through but Portugal hold firm.

72 mins: Iran's Hossein Kaebi picks up a yellow card after he brings down Cristiano Ronaldo.

68 mins: Rasoul Khatibi has a great chance to level for Iran, just minutes after coming on to the field. With the Portugal defence in disarray, Khatibi receives a long ball in the box but his shot glances across the face of the goal and Portugal survive.

66 mins: Portugal take off Maniche and bring on Armando Petit.

65 mins: Iran respond by making a double substitution. Ali Karimi makes way for Ferydoon Zandi and Mehrzad Madanchi is replaced by striker Rasoul Khatibi.

63 mins: GOAL Portugal 1-0 Iran
Portugal captain Luis Figo selflessly lays off the ball to Deco, who sends a curling right-footed shot straight into the corner of the net from 20 yards out.

"They must have just let the Portugal fans in - I hadn't heard them up until now."
Mick McCarthy, BBC Sport

60 mins: Portugal's Costinha sticks his leg out and trips up Mehrzad Madanchi - and receives a yellow card. The resulting free-kick is cleared by Nuno Valente.

59 mins: The pace of the game slows down in humid conditions under the closed roof of the Wald Stadion.

PLAYER RATER: You have been more impressed by the dogged Iranians in the game up until this point, with striker Vahid Hashemian leading at the moment. But 81% of you still think Portugal will get the win they need.

57 mins: Mehdi Mahdavikia breaks through for Iran but his final shot is weak and Ricardo safely collects.

55 mins: Cristiano Ronaldo has another good chance as Portugal continue to press forward. The 21-year-old fires in another shot with his left foot but Ebrahim Mirzapour gets down well to save.

54 mins: Pauleta has another chance to break the deadlock as he is teed up by Nuno Valente but his flicked right-footed shot goes wide.

53 mins: Deco puts Pauleta through but Iran make a crucial interception to push the ball away from danger.

50 mins: Iran piece together some flowing build-up play as they press forward through Mehdi Mahdavikia. The attack runs out of steam and Nuno Valente puts in a decent block to regain the momentum for Portugal.

48 mins: Cristiano Ronaldo is dispossessed by Mehdi Mahdavikia just outside the Iran box. The Manchester United player tracks back to regain the ball.

48 mins: Deco is booked for a high tackle on Iran defender Mohammad Nosrati.

46 mins: Portugal restart the match in Frankfurt, no doubt after a strong pep talk from boss Luiz Felipe Scolari.

"Cristiano Ronaldo seems to continue to flatter to deceive."
Gary Lineker, BBC Sport

"Portugal had plenty of possession and some chances, but they have not been ruthless enough and that has cost them."
Former Brazil player Leonardo, BBC Sport

45 mins + 2: The half-time whistle goes in Frankfurt. Portugal boss Luiz Felipe Scolari remonstrates with French referee Eric Poulat as they go down the tunnel.

45 min: Pauleta is booked after a challenge on Iranian captain Yahya Golmohammadi. The tempo of the match begins to wind down as half-time approaches as both sides get mired in midfield.

44 mins: Miguel is soon back in the thick of the action and drives the ball across the six-yard box but Deco is unable to turn it towards goal as Portugal's frustration continues.

42 mins: Portugal boss Luiz Felipe Scolari leaps up from the bench, reacting angrily after Miguel takes a knock on his shoulder. The defender leaves the pitch for treatment but should be back on soon.

40 mins: Iran enjoy a spell of possession as Ali Karimi makes progress down the right flank, the ball is weaved through to Vahid Hashemian but the Hanover player is not able to get a shot on goal as Portugal clear up.

PLAYER RATER: So far the fit-again Deco is catching your eye with an impressive rating - and although Portugal have failed to break Iran down, 85% of you still think they will get the win they need.

38 mins: Iran peel off in another breakaway move but Andranik Teymourian gets stuck on the wing and cannot get past the Portugal defence.

36 mins: Portugal captain Luis Figo writhes around on the floor after being grazed by a stray Iran boot. He receives treatment and carries on.

34 mins: Cristiano Ronaldo has another good chance for Portugal when his fizzing left-footed shot inches wide of the post.

33 mins: Another inswinging cross from Luis Figo from the right finds the head of Cristiano Ronaldo but his flick-on skips wide of the post.

31 mins: Iran's Andranik Teymourian rattles the post with his right-footed shot - had he been more accurate it would not have counted as he is judged offside.

"Iran look very organised and are sitting deep which is their plan. If Iran go on like this though Portugal will begin to make their chances pay."
Danny Mills, BBC Five Live summariser

28 mins: Luis Figo sends in yet another corner for Portugal but Ricardo Carvalho sends his glancing header two yards wide of the far post.

27 mins: Portugal show shades of Argentina as they string together passes across midfield but Luis Figo gets trapped by two Iran defenders and cannot get his cross through.

25 mins: Luis Figo unleashes the ball to Cristiano Ronaldo, who is free on the right, but the Manchester United winger sends the ball long.

23 mins: Iran skipper Mehdi Mahdavikia sends in two decent crosses as Iran take their turn to test Portugal but, despite a few jitters in Portugal's defence, they clear well and avert the danger.

"Portugal can afford to push on and be a bit more aggressive and adventurous in their play. They seem to have too many men back."
Mick McCarthy, BBC Sport

19 mins: Midfielder Javad Nekounman collects his second yellow card of the tournament after a late challenge on Luis Figo. He will miss Iran's final group match against Angola.

16 mins: The play quickly moves to the other end as Portugal lay seige to the Iran goal with a succession of corners. Luis Figo and the returning Deco take turns at sending in pinpoint passes but Iran hold firm. Figo and Cristiano Ronaldo are swapping wings frequently as Portugal's fluid play hits its stride.

14 mins: Mehrzad Madanchi finds himself unmarked in front of goal for Iran but his final shot is poor.

12 mins: Deco looks like he is warming up as he tests Ebrahim Mirzapour with a stinging shot but it is tipped to safety over the bar for a corner. Figo swings in another but it is cleared.

11 mins: Ricardo Carvalho concedes a free-kick to the right of the Portugal goal and Iran try to take advantage by pumping the ball forward. It is their first real chance of the half but Javad Nekounam heads the ball over the bar.

9 mins: Portugal full-back Miguel goes on a brilliant mazy run down the right but he chooses not to roll it back to his team-mates and his left-foot effort is snuffed out by Rahman Rezaei.

7 mins: Luis Figo takes the first corner of the match for Portugal and loops it out towards Maniche, who is waiting on the edge of the box. However, the former Chelsea loan player sends another rash shot high and wide.

"Iran have set their stall out well but they have to keep the ball a bit better."
Danny Mills, BBC Five Live summariser

5 mins: A good challenge by Javan Nekonam thwarts Pauleta as he tries to unleash another shot. Maniche then fires in snapshot from distance but it is well over.

4 mins: The long ball is hoofed up to Pauleta but he is caught offside. Iran struggle to string more than two passes together as Portugal pass the ball around nicely.

3 mins: Portugal dominate the opening stages - they hae never lost their second match at a World Cup so the omens bode well for them.

1 min: Portugal captain Luis Figo is operating well up the right of the pitch as Cristiano Ronaldo is placed out on the left. Figo fires through in a couple of early crosses into the box but Iran tidy up.

1400 BST: Iran kick off the match in warm and sticky conditions.

1355 BST: As anthem watch at the World Cup continues, it is pleasing to note that Portugal are particularly vocal and Luis Figo finishes it with a shout of encouragement to his team. Iran also join in their anthem but with less gusto.

1353 BST: The teams wait patiently in the tunnel with Portugal skipper Luis Figo looking cool and collected. Yahya Golmohammadi skippers the Iran side and he leads out his team, who line up for the anthems.

"Iran were deservedly beaten in their opening match by Mexico. There are obviously problems in the camp and I expect Portugal to win."
Former England player Lee Dixon, BBC Sport

"The players like him so much because he is a big motivator and he tries to protect the team from everything."
Brazilian Leonardo on Luiz Felipe Scolari, BBC Sport

1342 BST: The roof has been closed at the Wald Stadion to keep out the intense heat in Frankfurt, which should be a relief to the fans and the players.

1338 BST: The atmosphere is building at Frankfurt's 49,000-capacity Wald Stadion. Iran can expect plenty of home support as many Iranians have emigrated to Germany, with 20,000 living in Frankfurt along. Four of the international team also play in the Bundesliga.

1315 BST: Portugal boss Luiz Felipe Scolari brings in Franciso Costinha, Maniche and Deco in place of Armando Petit, Tiago and Simao Sabrosa. Manchester United winger Cristiano Ronaldo keeps his place in the Portugal side after shaking off a leg muscle injury.

Iran drop veteran striker Ali Daei to the bench after he complained of a back injury - and was criticised - following their 3-1 loss to Mexico. Daei is replaced by Vahid Hashemian but Ferydoon Zandi is still out with flu.
