Chilavert stands by his man
Maldini is the right manager insists Chilavert
Paraguay captain Jose Luis Chilavert says manager Cesare Maldini is the right man to lead the South Americans into the World Cup.
Flamboyant goalkeeper Chilavert has stood by his Italian coach despite criticism from others inside Paraguay. "I think that Maldini is a fantastic coach," Chilavert, who is suspended for the opening World Cup match, said.
"People have criticised Maldini, but I think we should take advantage of the experience he brings." Maldini, who coached Italy at the 1998 World Cup finals in France, has been an unpopular figure with Paraguayan coaches since replacing Sergio Markarian in December. The country's League Manager's Association even recommended he be kicked out of the country for a supposed breach of immigration laws. But Chilavert, 36, believes that Paraguay will find their form under Maldini in time for the big kick-off. "I am not at all worried and I think we will have a good tournament," the Strasbourg shot-stopper said. "I know the capabilities of my team-mates and we will be ready to give a good account of ourselves." Chilavert will miss the opening clash with South Africa on 2 June while serving a ban for spitting at Brazil full-back Roberto Carlos during a qualifying encounter.
