Austria's Floegel and Turkey's Buruk vie for the ball
Turkey 5-0 Austria (6-0 aggregate)

Turkey fired themselves into the World Cup finals with a blistering 5-0 win against Austria.

They won their European play-off 6-0 on aggregate.

Turkey dominated the game with Inter Milan forward Okan Buruk linking with Hakan Sukur to devastating effect to guarantee a first World Cup berth since 1954.

It was Burak, scorer of the only goal in Vienna, that put the game beyond Austria's reach in the 44th minute.

This was after Bayer Leverkusen's Yildiray Basturk and the enigmatic Sukur both scored fine goals to put Austria firmly on the back foot.

Early second half substitutions by coach Otto Baric failed to turn the game for the Austrians.

As a double strike from Arif Erdem sent Turkey marching to the 2002 finals in South Korea and Japan.

Teams:

Turkey: Rustu Recber, Umit Davala, Abdullah Ercan, Umit Ozat, Alpay Ozalan, Emre Asik, Okan Buruk, Tugay Kerimoglu, Hakan Sukur, Yildiray Basturk, Hasan Sas.

Austria: Bernhard Wohlfahrt, Gilbert Prilasnig, Zeljko Vukovic, Thomas Winkhofer, Thomas Floegel, Stefan Lexa, Gerard Strafner, Markus Hiden, Ivica Vastic, Andreas Herzog, Mario Haas.
