Troubled Greek journey

BBC Sport Online tracks Greece's World Cup qualifying journey.

Greece have no chance of reaching the World Cup finals and will be playing for pride against England in their last qualifier of the campaign.

Germany 2-0 Greece

Greece went behind to a Sebastian Deisler goal and, even though they caused their hosts plenty of problems in Hamburg, they could not find a way past keeper Oliver Kahn.

Vassilios Tsartas hit the post before team-mate Marinos Ouzounidis deflected an effort from Germany's Mehmet Scholl into his own net.

Greece 1-0 Finland

Nikos Lymperopoulos chipped Finnish keeper Antti Niemi in the 59th minute to score the eventual winner for Greece at the Olympic Stadium in Athens.

Greece moved second, level on three points with Finland, to give themselves early hope of qualification.

Albania 2-0 Greece

Greece's ambitions received a blow when they suffered defeat at the hands of Albania for the first time.

Georgios Karagounis scored an own goal and Albanian substitute Ervin Fakaj sealed the win against an under-strength Greek side.

Greece 2-4 Germany

An entertaining opening period saw Greece equalise twice, through Angelo Charisteas and Georgios Georgiadis, after going behind to Marko Rehmer's tap-in and Michael Ballack's penalty.

Germany had Deisler sent-off with half-an-hour left but the home side could not take advantage, with goals from Miroslav Klose and Marco Bode giving the visitors victory.

Nikos Machlas

Greece 1-0 Albania

The Balkan derby saw Greece gain revenge for their loss in the reverse fixture.

Striker Nikos Machlas came of the bench to score the winner when he volleyed in following a corner from Karagounis.

Greece 0-2 England

Greece put up a spirited resistance but eventually succumbed to revitalised England.

The home side held out until the 64th minute before England's patience paid off with Paul Scholes scrambling in the visitors' opener.

A trademark David Beckham free-kick late in the game secured England's win.

Finland 5-1 Greece

Otto Rehhagel's first game in charge of Greece saw them convincingly beaten by Finland.

Mikael Forssell and Aki Riihilahti put the home side two up before Panithinaikos's Giorgos Karagounis pulled one back for Greece.

But Joonas Kolkka, Forssell and Jari Litmanen scored for an emphatic Finland win.
