Not one of England's best
BBC Sport's Alan Hansen gives his opinions after England's 2-0 victory over Albania at St James' Park.
Six points out of six - you can't ask for more than that. I thought England had many chances, if they had taken them they would have had six or seven goals. They passed and moved it - Beckham was fantastic from start to finish - a captain's performance through and through. Every time there was a lull in play and England looked like they were struggling a bit - up pops Beckham.
For a player that missed a couple of chances previously, it was a fantastic finish from Michael Owen after a great ball in from Paul Scholes. It was just what England needed - they had four or five great chances, but they hadn't taken them. Then, all of a sudden, Owen pops up to score the vital goal. But I thought defensively England were sloppy. At 1-0, you are going to be edgy, but you have to get a hold of the ball. But England started to give the ball away and suddenly, they were under the cosh. As for Robbie Fowler, you think if he had any confidence, he should of have had two goals before his wonder goal. But his strike was a class finish, everything about it was top class. If you look at the performance individually, it wasn't great, but England got the result and that's the most important thing. |
