Ryan Giggs hasn't given up on his World Cup ambitions despite Wales' failure to reach the 2002 finals.

Saturday's 0-0 draw with Armenia at the Millennium Stadium ended outside hopes of Welsh qualification for the first time since 1958, but Giggs is staying positive.

"I don't think you ever start to think about not going to finals. The side that played Armenia was a very young side," he said.

"There's plenty of potential there. We are not losing games, and that's a start.

"We have to begin turning the draws into wins and I'm sure we are not too far away from that.

"The team is definitely making progress and we just need to turn that corner now.

"It was disappointing against Armenia because it was our best chance of a win.

"First half we had total control and created a lot of chances. if one of those had gone in then I think we would have gone on to score a lot more goals."

Giggs, who looks set to continue as Wales captain against Norway on Wednesday, added: "It's up to us to start scoring the goals because the lads at the other end are doing their jobs."

As his Manchester United colleagues such as David Beckham and Paul Scholes celebrate in the glow of England's win in Germany, Giggs is left to contemplate another match without success in Cardiff.

It is six games without a win in the Millennium Stadium for Wales, and Giggs says: "It is disappointing because we would like to win every game here.

"We would like to come here knowing that sides are scared of our record. We haven't got a bad record, but we are not winning games."

Next for Giggs and his side is the clash in Oslo on Wednesday.

"Norway are a good side, but we have got that match and one against Belarus and would like to finish the group with two wins.

"It is all about seeding and it could get more and more difficult, so we need to get a couple of wins under our belt."

They may have a good chance in Oslo, as Norway are now bottom of their group after a 3-0 defeat in Poland.

Blackburn defender Henning Berg, who could be marking club-mate Nathan Blake on Wednesday, admitted his side had their eyes on the next tournament.

"We are looking ahead to the future, but a win against Wales would be welcome," he said.

"I'll be facing Blakey, so I'm sure there'll be plenty of banter before and during the game."
