England player ratings
Michael Owen
Michael Owen scored a sensational England hat-trick
BBC Sport Online's Howard Nurse rates England's players during the extraordinary 5-1 win in Munich.

David Seaman

Not really to blame for Jancker's goal and did well to keep out Boehme's shot. A lot steadier than Oliver Kahn and did not let England down.

Gary Neville

Got forward plenty of times to put pressure on the Germans. Defensively sound, barely putting a foot wrong.

Ashley Cole

Another impressive performance on the world stage. Defended solidly when required and was always keen to push forward.

Rio Ferdinand

Partly at fault for the opening goal but recovered from a hesitant start. His partnership with Campbell improved as the game progressed.

Sol Campbell

Poor marking alongside Ferdinand enabled Jancker to open the scoring but he too settled down. Shackled the Germans in the second half as England went on the rampage.

David Beckham

Brilliant captain's display. Helped create the first three goals. Showed no fitness problems and bossed England's midfield, proving that he is truly a world-class player.

Steven Gerrard

Hooked the ball back to help set-up Owen's equaliser and then scored his first England goal from 25 yards. Given a breather late on after all the hard work was done.

Paul Scholes

Not the most noticeable of displays from the Manchester United midfielder but played an important part in helping England to victory.

Nick Barmby
Headed the ball on to set up Owen's vital equaliser and played a lively part on the left but faded slightly in the second half.

Emile Heskey

Always busy, helped create England's third goal by heading down Beckham's cross. Picked up a careless booking before scoring England's fifth.

Michael Owen
The Liverpool lad is fast becoming an England scoring legend. Reacted quickly to score the equaliser and then fired England 3-1 ahead before completing a hat-trick. Faultless.

Substitutes:

Steve McManaman (65 mins) Replaced Barmby on the left.

Owen Hargreaves (77 mins) Took over from Gerrard late in the game.

Jamie Carragher (83 mins) Played the final seven minutes after Scholes was withdrawn.
