England player ratings

BBC Sport Online's James Standley rates England's individual performances in the match against Holland.

First-half ratings:

Nigel Martyn (off after 45 minutes):

Started with a great save from Ruud Van Nistelrooy, but then beaten twice in 90 seconds. Could do little with first but will be disappointed with effort from Zenden's drive.

Gary Neville (off after 45 minutes):

Played Van Nistelrooy onside early on, but produced a great tackle to halt Cocu. Nearly scored with superb dipping shot, but booked for ugly lunge on Giovanni Van Bronkhurst.

Ashley Cole (off after 45 minutes):

The young Gunner was given a torrid time by Zenden, who got behind him twice in the opening 20 minutes. Partially redeemed himself with good cross to set up Andrew Cole.

Martin Keown (off after 46 minutes):

The old man of the England team was his usual solid self. Produced a superb block to deny Van Nistelrooy after six minutes, but could do little to stem the orange tide.

Wes Brown (off after 45 minutes):

Quite, efficient defensive performance from the young Manchester United defender, but had little real impact on the game.

Jamie Carragher:

Failed to get to grips with intricate Dutch passing patterns as midfield anchor, became frustrated and was booked for nasty foul on Zenden.

Owen Hargreaves (off after 45 minutes):

Nervous debut from the Calgary kid, who tried hard but never got into the game. Struggled to link up with Ashley Cole, but did play a part in setting up Andrew Cole chance.

David Beckham (off after 45 minutes):

One moment of class, before departing at the break, when he bamboozled Edwin Van Bronkhurst and forced Van de Sar to save, but passing was frequently off-target.

Paul Scholes (off after 45 minutes):

Neat and effective, but unable to take a grip on midfield. Looked far more comfortable on the few occasions he got the ball in the final third.

Andrew Cole (off after 69 minutes):

Supply was totally lacking, apart from one cross from namesake Ashley, from which the Red Devil managed to get a soft shot on target.

Robbie Fowler (off after 45 minutes):

Starved of the ball, and invariably gave it away on the very rare occasions it came his way. One sharp lob after Stam hesitated.

Second-half ratings:

Richard Wright:

Replaced James after 90 seconds and claimed a corner in impressive style, but had little else to do as Holland decided to ban shooting.

Chris Powell:

Came on for Ashley Cole and looked secure enough, but got forward as little as the man he replaced.

Danny Mills:

Brought a bit of industry to the match and tried to force the pace down the right, and causing Van Bronkhurst some awkward moments.

Gareth Southgate:

Took over the captain's armband, but little chance to show his stuff as Holland eased off the pedal in the second 45 minutes.

Ugo Ehiogu:

One glorious raking, diagonal pass to Smith, but rarely called into action defensively as Holland relaxed.

Jamie Carragher:

Vast improvement on his dire display in the first half after he moving to right back. Linked to good effect with Mills a couple of times.

Michael Carrick:

Some neat touches by the West Ham youngster, but the midfielder did little to stop Holland's control of the midfield.

Frank Lampard:

Came on alongside former West Ham team-mate Carrick, but failed to stamp his authority on midfield as Holland weaved their intricate passing patterns.

Nicky Barmby:

Replaced Hargreaves down the left but with England's passing struggling he had little chance to have any effect on the game.

Michael Owen:

Should have done better at the death, shooting over left-fotted after typical dart into the box, but starved of decent chances.

Alan Smith:

Managed to have a shot, but only when he should have passed to Barmby. Also won a free-kick, but biggest contribution to the evening was freshly-died hair.

David James:
Came on for 90 seconds but was injured and replaced after colliding with Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink while making a brave save from the Chelsea striker.
