Clockwatch: Albania 1-3 England
![]()
All the action as it happened in the World Cup qualifier in Tirana.
19:30 BST England frontmen Michael Owen and Andy Cole kick off. 5 mins: Albanian full-back Altin Lala is forced to head clear from under his own crossbar as David Beckham's cross nearly finds Andy Cole in the six-yard box. 8 mins: Beckham's fizzing cross from a free-kick on the left is deflected over the bar, with Sol Campbell poised to connect with a header.
15: The crowd suddenly comes to life as Albania launch their first meaningful attack - but the low cross from Igli Tare evades all his team-mates and England clear the danger. 18: Albania's first attempt on goal sees Alban Bushi try his luck from 30 yards out - but the shot flies over the bar. 24: Sol Campbell leaves the field for treatment for an ankle injury, temporarily reducing England to 10 men. 27: With Campbell back on the pitch, England try to rediscover their attacking momentum - and Albania keeper Foto Strakosha fluffs a straightforward through-ball and concedes a needless corner. 28: Campbell, clearly feeling the effects of the knock to his left ankle, is forced to hobble off. Wes Brown comes on for his third cap, to increase the Manchester United contingent to six.
31: Andy Cole's strong run is ended by a foul just outside the Albanian box. David Beckham tries a trademark free-kick - but Foto Strakosha dives to left to push the ball away. 35: England's best move so far ends in a corner after a strong run from Owen and a cross from Beckham. 41: Altin Lala becomes the first player to be booked, following a foul on Ashley Cole. From the free-kick, Beckham tries his luck again - but Strakosha produces another diving save. 46: A lightning burst from Owen leaves the Albanian defence back-pedalling - but he fails to slip the ball into the path of the on-rushing Andy Cole. The referee blows the whistle to bring an end to a frustrating first half for England. 46: England make one change at the start of the second half. Liverpool's Emile Heskey replaces the ineffective Steve McManaman on the left side of midfield - just as he did against Finland last Saturday. 47: Another excellent Beckham cross looks like reaching Andy Cole in the six-yard box - but the ball is plucked off his toe by Geri Cipi's superb interception. 49: Andy Cole is fouled again, giving Beckham another dangerous free-kick. His shot hits the wall and the ball rebounds to Paul Scholes. He crosses to the far post - but Heskey is unable to connect and the ball runs out for a goalkick. 51: Albania's second yellow card is shown to Besnik Hasi for dissent.
54: Having dominated the start of the second half, England suddenly suffer a scare. Alban Bushi's 30-yard shot is deflected and deceives Seaman. The ball hits the keeper's chest and dangerously bounces towards the on-rushing forwards - but Seaman gratefully regathers the ball. 60: England are unlucky not to be awarded a penalty. When Neville's through-ball sends Nicky Butt into the area, he is bundled to the floor by Besnik Hasi - but the referee waves play on. 64: Seaman saves at his near post from Arjan Bellai. 70: Beckham and Neville again link up to good effect down the right flank. Neville flights over a great cross - but the ball flicks off Andy Cole's head and the move breaks down.
72: The ball breaks to Paul Scholes just outside the Albanian area. He instantly threads a precise pass to Michael Owen, who takes it forward and with his second touch tucks it past keeper Strakosha and into the net.
81: Albania make their first substitution, Nukaj replacing Kola. Gary Neville is booked for time-wasting after delaying a throw-in. 83: Teddy Sheringham comes on goalscorer Michael Owen. There are now seven Manchester United players on the pitch.
85: England take complete control with another impressive goal, started and finished by Paul Scholes. Andy Cole receives Scholes' pass, charges down the inside-left channel to the by-line and pulls the ball back across the face of the goal, for Scholes to hook it home. 86: Andy Cole is booked for a clumsy foul on Fatmir Vata, ruling the striker out of England's next qualifier, against Greece in June. Vata is stretchered off and is replaced by Altin Rraklli.
92: Albania hit England with a sucker punch in injury time. Poor marking at a throw-in allows substitute Altin Rraklli to race into the box and slam an angled shot past Seaman and in off the post. 93: England, clearly rattled, surrender possession again - and Rraklli puts the ball in the net again, but to the visitors' relief he is clearly off-side and it does not count.
95: Beckham pumps over a free-kick from the left flank, Andy Cole attacks the ball and prods it past keeper Strakosha. It is the Manchester United frontman's first goal for England in his 13th international. 95: As England celebrate the goal that wraps up the points, the crowd become more agitated and bottles are hurled onto the pitch. Ashley Cole crashes to floor clutching his face, having apparently been hit by a missile. 96: The final whistle goes, giving England their second straight win.
