![]() Lecce's Davor Vugrinec (c) scored for Croatia
BBC Sport Online rounds up all the action from the latest round of qualifying matches for the 2002 World Cup.
Group One Slovenia held Russia to a 1-1 draw in Moscow despite falling behind after just nine minutes. Dmitry Khohlov gave the hosts the lead only for Aleksander Knavs to net an equaliser after 22 minutes. The result leaves Russia on top of Group One with seven points from three matches, while Slovenia are second on six points from four games. The Faroe Islands picked up a 2-0 victory in Luxembourg thanks to goals in the last 15 minutes from Christian Jacobsen and Kurt Morkore. Switzerland's veteran striker Stephane Chapuisat struck in the 84th minute to earn his team a 1-1 draw against Yugoslavia. The Yugoslavs, cheered on by a capacity 36,000 crowd, took a 68th-minute lead when skipper Sinisa Mihajlovic gave Swiss goalkeeper Marco Pascolo no chance with a curling free-kick from 25 yards out.
Group Two Ireland moved into second place in group two after a convincing 4-0 win over Cyprus on Saturday. Ireland and Manchester United captain Roy Keane sparked the rout after 33 minutes as he volleyed home a cross by Leeds United fullback Gary Kelly. The lead was doubled two minutes before halftime, when Ian Harte converted a penalty after Kevin Kilbane had been fouled by Georgios Theodotou. Kelly made it 3-0 with a deflected shot from 20 metres after 80 minutes, then Roy Keane rounded off a fine individual display on his 50th international appearance by claiming Ireland's fourth goal one minute before time. The Netherlands got their World Cup campaign back on track, putting five goals past Andorra to earn three points against Andorra.
In the ninth minute, Patrick Kluivert headed home a Paul Bosvelt cross for the first Dutch goal of the match. The Dutch had to wait until the 36th minute for their next goal when a Mark van Bommel shot ricocheted back to the feet of Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, who converted to take them to half time 2-0 in front. Van Hooijdonk had an impressive outing, scoring on the hour, just two minutes after he had come on the pitch. The Benfica striker got his second 11 minutes later before PSV midfielder Van Bommel scored five minutes before the final whistle.
Group Three The Czech Republic strengthened their grip on Group Three with a 1-0 victory in North Ireland. Lazio's Pavel Nedved grabbed the only goal of the game in Belfast after just 12 minutes to all but end the qualification hopes of Sammy McIlroy's side, but the home side did hit the woodwork twice. Bulgaria came from behind to beat Iceland 2-1 to move into second place on seven points, three behind the Czechs. Krassimir Chomakov and Dimitar Berbatov replied to Herman Hreidarsson's opener. Ebbe Sand scored a hat-trick as Denmark trounced Malta 5-0 at Ta'Qali stadium. Jan Heintze and substitute Claus Jensen completed the scoring for the visitors.
Group Four Anders Svensson's first half goal was enough for Sweden to edge past Macedonia in Gothenburg and enhance their prospects in a tight group.
Moldova had two players sent off but held on for a 0-0 draw against Azerbaijan. Goalkeeper Eugen Hmaruc was dismissed early on for handling the ball outside the penalty box. Midfielder Serghei Epureanu followed him later for a second yellow card. Azerbaijan also lost a player when Farukh Ismailov was sent off for his second bookable offence 10 minutes from time. Turkey and Slovakia drew 1-1 in a game full of chances for both sides to leave three teams neck-and-neck at the top of group four. The result keeps both Turkey and Slovakia at the top of the group on eight points and they are now joined by Sweden. Inter Milan striker Hakan Sukur scored from the penalty spot to put Turkey ahead in the 53rd minute but the Slovaks drew level 15 minutes later when Robert Tomaschek fired home after a scramble in the box.
Group Five Emmanuel Olisadebe's double in Oslo helped Poland beat Norway 3-2 and kept them on track for qualification at the top of the group. Defeat virtually eliminates Norway, who had fought back bravely from the Nigerian-born striker's brace in the first half-hour. John Carew and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer put them on level terms but substitute Bartosz Karwan headed home their winner ten minutes from time. John Hartson grabbed two goals to give Wales a World Cup lifeline in Yerevan. Armenia led in the first half through Artak Minasyan, before Hartson's double put Wales ahead. Andrey Movsisyan equalised but the home side had Albert Sargsyan sent off with nine minutes to go. Ukraine played a scoreless draw against Belarus in qualifying match that followed a clash between fans from the neighboring nations.
Group Six Scotland missed the chance to go clear at the top of the group as substitute Daniel van Buyten grabbed a stoppage time equaliser for 10-man Belgium at Hampden Park. Billy Dodds fired Scotland ahead after just 70 seconds, before adding a second on 29 minutes from the penalty spot after Eric Deflandre was dismissed for handling Colin Hendry's goalbound header. Belgium reduced the deficit on 58 minutes when Marc Wilmots headed home and van Buyten completed the comeback. Bosko Balaban hit a first half hat-trick and Lecce's Davor Vugrinec added a fourth as Croatia beat Latvia 4-1.
Group seven Spain extended their lead at the top of group seven as they beat underdogs Liechtenstein 5-0 at the Rico Perez stadium. A Gaizka Mendieta double, a neat back heel from Raul and a diving header from Ivan Helguera were complemented by Fernando Hierro penalty to give the group leaders a comfortable win. Bosnia and Austria drew 1-1 in a lively World Cup qualifier which left both a long way behind Spain. Hamburg SV midfielder Sergej Barbarez put Bosnia team ahead in the 43rd minute. Bosnia started strongly in the second half and had more of the game but conceded an equaliser when Austria left back Michael Baur headed home in the 61st minute at the near post from a corner by captain Andreas Herzog. Group Eight Two first-half goals from Filippo Inzaghi helped Italy a step closer to the 2002 World Cup finals with a 2-0 win over Romania that left the home side's hopes of qualifying in tatters.
Hungary and Lithuania drew 1-1 at the People's Stadium in Budapest. After a scoreless first half, Vilmos Seboek put Hungary in front in the 71st minute, when he drove in a penalty kick. Four minutes later, Tomas Razanauskas responded by converting a free kick to equalize.
Group Nine England kick-started their World Cup campaign as they fought back to beat Finland 2-1 at Anfield. An Aki Rihilahti effort deflected in off Gary Neville to put Finland ahead but Michael Owen and skipper David Beckham rescued Sven Goran Eriksson's side. Germany needed a late goal from newcomer Miroslav Klose to beat a brave Albanian side 2-1. The young Kaiserslautern striker, who came on in the second half to win his first cap, scored with a diving header into an unguarded net two minutes from time to save his side from an embarrassing draw. Sebastian Deisler put the home team in front with a 25-yard drive five minutes into the second half but the vistors levelled with a powerful effort from 20 metres by midfielder Bledar Kola 15 minutes later.
