England's hopes of reaching the Cyprus Cup final ended on Monday with a 2-0 loss to Canada in Nicosia Town.

Christine Sinclair put Canada ahead just before half-time and Brittany Timko added a second with a fine half-volley shortly after the restart.

England skipper Faye White had a goal disallowed late on but Canada held firm and will face Holland in the final.

Hope Powell's side last reached the Cyprus Cup final in 2009 when they beat Canada 3-1 to win the competition.

Victory in Nicosia on Monday would have put Powell's team top of Group A and into the final.

Instead they finished third in the group behind Canada and second-placed Scotland, who finished their group games with a goalless draw against Italy.

National coach Powell said: "The result was obviously disappointing but I was really pleased with the performance, especially in the first half.

"It was just that final bit, the finishing, that was missing. We weren't clinical enough in front of goal but the good thing was that we created chances.

"Credit to Canada, the two chances they had they scored from. We had numerous chances but couldn't score."

England's first opening arrived after just three minutes but from right back Dunia Susi's cross, striker Ellen White sent a six-yard shot wastefully wide.

Another good Susi cross three minutes later was fired over the bar from 10 yards by left winger Rachel Yankey.

As England continued to press, right winger Alex Scott and midfielder Anita Asante both went close with long range efforts.

And after midfielder Diana Matheson had skied Canada's first goal attempt over the top, Scott was unlucky with a 35th-minute drive that zipped into the side-netting.

But two minutes into first-half stoppage time, sloppy play in midfield and a mistake by goalkeeper Karen Bardsley led to Canada taking the lead.

The unmarked Matheson's 20-yard drive was spilled by Bardsley and Sinclair bundled in the rebound after the keeper had blocked her first effort.

The goal rocked England and when they went further behind, it was once again through poor defending.

Central defender Candace Chapman's deep cross dropped over a static back line and Timko had time and space to send an 18-yard lob into the roof of the net.

England hit back but despite Ellen White clipping the bar with an 82nd minute cross-shot, they rarely threatened to score the goals they needed to save the game.
