England's women end Cyprus Cup campaign with draw

England drew 2-2 with Switzerland to finish third in their group, failing to advance further, at the Cyprus Cup.

Lara Dickenmann had given the Swiss the lead before goals from captain Casey Stoney and substitute Lianne Sanderson put a below-strength England in front.

However, Dickenmann equalised six minutes from time to leave England coach Hope Powell frustrated.

"Even with the less recognised players we should still manage to win a game like this," said Powell.

"We were better in the second half than in the first, but we had chances to win the match and failed to take them.

"In the end we drew, but it felt like we lost. It just wasn't good enough - and some players have to take a look at themselves."

In a poor first-half display, England's only chance fell to Dunia Susi - however, the winger was foiled by Swiss goalkeeper Marisa Brunner, who dashed out to make a good block.

606: DEBATE

Switzerland's opener came when keeper Siobhan Chamberlain failed to hold on to a 27th-minute Martina Mose cross, allowing Dickenmann to head into the empty net.

A Mose corner should have led to a second Swiss goal eight minutes into the second half, but striker Ramona Bachmann sent her six-yard shot wastefully over the bar.

England made the most of that let-off with a 56th-minute equaliser - Stoney forcing the ball home at the second attempt following Sue Smith's curling free-kick.

Powell's team took control from this point and went ahead when Sanderson drilled home a low 12-yard shot in the 76th minute.

But from a similar distance and with the goal gaping in front of her three minutes later Sanderson shot woefully wide.

And that miss proved very costly when, six minutes from time, Dickenmann turned in the rebound after Bachmann's effort came back off the far post.

England's failure to qualify for the knockout stages was all-the-more disappointing considering they won last year's tournament.
