England's hold on the Cyprus Cup is slipping after a defeat by Canada in the second of their three group games.

An early goal by Christina Julien gave the Canadians revenge for the defeat they suffered against Hope Powell's team in the 2009 final.

England's defence failed to clear a Christine Sinclair cross and Julien drove in the loose ball.

After a poor first-half display, England should have equalised when Emily Westwood headed over the bar.

Minutes later Westwood had a 12-yard shot blocked and England continued to press throughout the second period.

They were almost caught on the break five minutes from time, when striker Sinclair broke clear but shot straight at goalkeeper Karen Bardsley.

Further England pressure failed to yield a late equaliser and they will head into their final group match, against Switzerland on Monday, with the odds stacked against them reaching the final.

The winners of the two groups will meet in Wednesday's final and Canada look likely to go through as they will take a 100% record into their last game against South Africa, the weakest team in Group 2.

Coach Powell said: "It will be disappointing if we don't make the final, but on a positive note we had a better performance against Canada than against the South Africans.

"In the second half in particular we outplayed them and created a number of chances, but we just couldn't convert them.

"If we can continue that second half form into the Switzerland game and put our chances away though, then hopefully we can finish the group on a winning note."
