Stoney hits treble in Chelsea win

By Tony Leighton

Women's football

England defender Casey Stoney hit a hat-trick as Chelsea opened their Women's Premier League campaign with a 7-0 hammering of Watford.

Carla Cantrell bagged all four as Leeds Carnegie won 4-0 at Bristol Academy.

Like Chelsea, Everton and Arsenal had their first outings after getting their players back from Euro 2009 duty.

Everton thumped Nottingham Forest 6-0, the Gunners beat Birmingham City 1-0, leaders Millwall beat Doncaster 2-0 and Blackburn Rovers won 2-1 at Sunderland.

Watford 0-7 Chelsea

Stoney made the most of a rare outing in midfield to notch her hat-trick, the first two goals of which sandwiched a Dunia Susi strike before the interval.

Stoney's hat-trick was completed just after the break, then goals by Claire Rafferty, Sarah Kempson and Emma Whitter completed the rout.

Everton 6-0 Nottingham Forest

Emily Westwood scored in the third minute and again just after the half-hour to set Everton up for a comfortable victory.

Gwennan Harries and Natasha Dowie each hit the net in the last three minutes of the first half to effectively wrap up victory.

And the Toffees gave themselves an easy final half-hour after Fern Whelan and Fara Williams had taken the goal haul to six by the 56th minute.

Birmingham City 0-1 Arsenal

A goal after just two minutes by Scotland midfielder Kim Little proved enough to give the Gunners all three points.

But the champions never approached their best and Blues went close to equalising through Dani Saulter, Kerys Harrop and Dannii Bird.

Millwall Lionesses 2-0 Doncaster Rovers Belles

Lindsay Morgan gave the in-form Lionesses the lead midway through an evenly contested first half.

The home side then had the better of the second period and struck the woodwork before a late Ann-Marie Heatherson strike assured them of victory.

Bristol Academy 0-4 Leeds Carnegie

A second minute Cantrell opener was the only goal of the first half, and Bristol were unlucky not to equalise when Katie Daley's 55th-minute free-kick hit the post.

But 10 minutes later Cantrell grabbed her second goal and she completed her hat-trick with a 78th-minute penalty.

The England Under-23 striker left her best till last, however, drilling an 18-yard shot into the top corner of the net for her fourth goal five minutes from time.

Leeds have now won both of their League games following their delayed start to the campaign, but for rock bottom Bristol this was a fourth successive defeat.

Sunderland 1-2 Blackburn Rovers

Blackburn bossed the first half and held a well-deserved 2-0 lead at the break, Nat Preston and Katie Anderton scoring the goals.

But after Sophie Williams halved the deficit the Black Cats took control and Rovers held on for victory only through some fine saves by goalkeeper Krystal Parker.
