England women make quarter-finals

England women qualified for the quarter-finals of Euro 2009 courtesy of a 1-1 draw with Sweden in Turku.

Skipper Faye White gave England the lead with a header on 28 minutes, but Sweden equalised from the penalty spot five minutes before half-time.

Italy's 2-0 victory over Russia meant England finished third in Group C and avoided defending champions Germany in the last eight.

Instead, Hope Powell's side will play hosts Finland on Thursday.

Sweden went through as group winners, and will play Norway, who finished third in Group B, on Friday.

Kelly Smith and Sue Smith both had early chances for England before White put her side ahead from Karen Carney's floated free-kick.

Lindsay Johnson then cleared Charlotte Rohlin's header off the line from a corner, but on 40 minutes Sweden's pressure finally told.

Katie Chapman fouled Lotta Schelin as she prepared to shoot, and Victoria Sandell Svensson converted from the spot.

Sara Thunebro's drilled free-kick was headed off the line by Alex Scott shortly before half-time, but England came on strong after the restart.

First Kelly Smith forced Lindahl into a flying save, before testing the Sweden goalkeeper with a crisp left-foot volley.

White had a late chance to win it for England, but she headed over when unmarked.

England women coach Hope Powell:
"We knew we had to raise our game to get where we wanted to be and at times we did play well, certainly in the second half.

"But I must applaud Sweden - they are solid and physically strong. Now we can look forward to playing Finland in their home country in the quarter-finals.

"I'm sure it will be a fantastic atmosphere and it's great that we can stay in Turku and don't have to pack."
