Extra-time agony stuns Sunderland

Sunderland women
Sunderland's ladies' team beat Newcastle 5-1 in their last match.

Sunderland ladies suffered an early exit from the FA Premier League Cup following a 3-1 extra-time defeat by Lincoln Ladies on Sunday.

Two late goals from Lincoln strikers Jodie Michalska and England star Amanda Barr ended their hopes but manager Mick Mulhern remained proud of his side.

"Lincoln are the favourites to win the league this year and we proved that we can compete with them," he said.

"There are more positives than negatives to take from the game."

Lincoln took a first-half lead when Sophie Wallis capitalised on a mistake to give them the lead.

Sarah Danby levelled matters for Sunderland after a Natalie Gutteridge shot was blocked and the rebound was forced home.

Extra-time was too much for the weary Wearsiders and their exit was confirmed by Lincoln's late flurry.
