Second-half goals from Li Jie and Xie Caixia sent Women's World Cup hosts China through to the quarter-finals as they beat New Zealand 2-0 in Tianjin.
The hosts needed to win and rely on Denmark failing to beat Brazil - but they made hard work of their part of the bargain.
Li Jie made the breakthrough for China with the crucial opener on 57 minutes.
The crossbar spared New Zealand further pain before Xie Caixia made certain with the second 11 minutes from time.
