Group A: USA 5-0 Nigeria
Mia Hamm led the home side to a formidable victory in front of 31,553 people in Philadelphia.
Hamm scored two early goals, one a penalty and the other a free-kick, and set up another in the second half before hitting a post.
Cindy Parlow also scored as did Abby Wambach and Julie Foudy, again from the penalty spot.
The Americans took the lead in Group A with six points and need only a draw against North
Korea in Columbus, Ohio, on Sunday to advance.
Group A: Sweden 1-0 North Korea
Sweden were indebted to an early goal by Victoria Svensson as they edged past North Korea.
The Swedes, who lost to the United States in their opener, withstood a late surge by the Asian champions.
Svensson
volleyed home right-footed in the seventh
minute after good work from Malin Andersson.
But they were forced to withstand a late onslaught from the Koreans.
"We play the best when we have the pressure on us,"
Svensson said, after Sweden lost their opening match to America.
Group D : Russia 3-0 Ghana
Russia eased past Ghana with goals from Marina Saenko, Natalia
Barbachinagot and Olga Letyushova in California.
Saenko scored from a free kick in the 36th minute, Barbachinagot made it 2-0 in the 54th and Letyushova
sealed the win with a close-range volley in the 80th minute.
But Russian goalkeeper Alla Volkova maintained her side's healthy lead with a series of saves on Ghanaian breaks.
Group D : China 1-1 Australia
Bai Jie scored in the 46th
minute as Australia held China to a draw in Carson, California.
China, who lost to the United States on penalties in the 1999 final, were on the attack for most of match against the defence-minded Australians.
Heather Garriock scored in the 28th minute to give the
Australians a short-lived lead.
