![]() Red Star end Leicester dreams
![]() Matt Elliott looks dejected after Red Star's first goal
Red Star Belgrade 3-1 Leicester (Agg: 4-2)
Red Star Belgrade outplayed a lethargic Leicester side on a volatile night in Vienna to send them out of the Uefa Cup. The sides went in 1-1 at half-time, with Leicester's Muzzy Izzet having cancelled out Drulic's earlier strike, but Red Star dominated after the interval and Drulic and Gvozdenovic added further goals. The atmosphere both on and off the pitch was incendiary. Flares were thrown onto the pitch in the first-half and Leicester's players were unhappy at what they perceived to be persistent diving from their opponents.
Captain Bunjevcevic hit a ball from inside his own half that caught out Matt Elliott and Gerry Taggart. Drulic nipped in between them, latched onto the ball and hit it low and hard past Tim Flowers. First chance The Red Star side then sat back and Leicester were able to have their first shot on goal after 28 minutes. Izzet lobbed the ball over Red Star's defence to Darren Eadie and the striker was disappointed to screw his shot wide of the far post. This sparked them into life, with Izzet the fulcrum for most of their best moves.
Eadie headed against the post and then dived to meet the rebound, but sent the ball wide. But on 41 minutes Leicester equalised and it was inevitably the inspirational Izzet who got the goal. Guppy crossed from the left and Izzet hit the ball high into the roof of the net. Lethargic performance Leicester started the second-half very slowly and Red Star quickly punished them. The excellent Drulic showed some neat footwork on the edge of Leicester's area and passed the ball left to Gvozdenovic, who shot emphatically past Flowers. Leicester struggled to get into the game and Red Star had several chances to put the tie out of reach.
Minutes later Markovic put in an excellent cross from the right and Pjanovic inexplicably headed wide from only six yards out. But Drulic soon made no mistake, running through into the centre of Leicester's area and hitting the ball wide of Flowers. Elliott had a good chance to equalise late on, but the Red Star defence was quick to dispossess him.
