Inter rocked by Feyenoord

Serie A leaders Inter Milan suffered a shock home defeat at the hands of Dutch side Feyenoord to leave Italian hopes of a Uefa Cup place in tatters.

With five-times Uefa Cup winners AC Milan thrashed by Borussia Dortmund, the chances of the two famous Milan sides meeting in the final on 8 May in Rotterdam are remote.

Their absence would be another bitter blow to Italian club soccer, which is already reeling after none of its clubs managed to reach the last eight of the Champions League for the second successive year.

Brazil striker Ronaldo made his first appearance in three months as a substitute for Inter but could not spare the home side from a demoralising defeat.

Inter had nearly all the pressure at the San Siro but Pierre van Hooijdonk emerged as the Feyenoord hero.

The Dutch striker scored the late equaliser and penalty shoot-out winner in the quarter-finals against PSV Eindhoven.

This time, he provided the cross which Inter's Ivan Cordoba could only turn into his own net for the only goal after 51 minutes.

Ronaldo, who has been suffering from a series of muscle injuries, came on after 70 minutes but the Brazilian was unable to turn the match.

Feyenoord's victory was poignant as the San Siro provided the stage for their European Cup triumph over Celtic 32 years ago.

The Dutch side have the added incentive of knowing this year's final will be played at their De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam as they bid to repeat their Uefa Cup triumph of 1974, when they beat Tottenham Hotspur.

Inter Milan: Fontana, Simic, Materazzi, Cordoba, Gresko, Sergio Conceicao, Di Biagio, Emre, Guglielminpietro, Ventola, Kallon. Subs: Moreau, Cristiano Zanetti, Ronaldo, Seedorf, Dalmat, Recoba, Ferraro.

Feyenoord: Zoetebier, Emerton, van Wonderen, Paauwe, Rzasa, Kalou, Bosvelt, Ono, van Persie, Tomasson, van Hooijdonk. Subs: Timmer, Gyan, Aros, Leonardo, Elmander, Korneev, Loovens.

Referee: Lubos Michel (Slovakia)
