Dutch break British hearts
Lille's exit on away goals is too much for goalkeeper Gregory Wimbee to bear
The eagerly-anticipated Battle of Britain was translated into double Dutch as Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven set up a quarter final meeting.
On a nail-biting night of action in Europe, David O'Leary's Leeds were beaten by a last-minute goal from Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink at Elland Road. Earlier on Thursday, Feyenoord had edged out Rangers 3-2 in a thrilling game that also saw each side have a player sent off. Elsewhere, there were shock wins for Hapoel Tel Aviv and Slovan Liberec. BBC Sport Online rounds up the best of Thursday's fourth round action.
Leeds' fast-fading season took another alarming lurch in the wrong direction as they were undone by PSV. Following a goalless draw in Holland, Leeds had chances to take control of the tie but faded badly as PSV grew stronger. Extra time beckoned before Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink struck with a brave diving header to send the Dutch through.
Rangers took a first-half lead in Rotterdam through Neil McCann but were then undone by two stunning Pierre van Hooijdonk free-kicks and a diving header from Bonaventure Kalou. Barry Ferguson's penalty and a red card for Patrick Paauwe gave Rangers hope but those aspirations disappeared along with McCann following his second booking with 18 minutes left.
Hapoel Tel Aviv and Slovan Liberec produced fourth-round shocks as they dumped out Parma and Lyon. Hapoel, who beat Chelsea in the second round, continued their giant-killing run with a 2-1 away win at the Ennio Tardini Stadium. Parma, Uefa Cup winners in 1999, fell behind to goals from Milan Osterc and Ishtavan Pishont before Emiliano Bonazzoli responded 10 minutes from time. But Hapoel hung on to become the first Israeli team to reach the last eight of the competition.
The pressure on coach Carlo Ancelotti looked set to increase as Milan's 1-0 first-leg lead was cancelled out in the San Siro by Mark Luijpers' goal on 71 minutes. But, after extra time failed to produce another goal, the Italian side held their nerve to win 3-2 in the shoot-out. French title contenders Lyon were floored by three goals in the final 14 minutes after the aggregate scores had been locked at 2-2. Patrick Muller cancelled out Jan Nezmar's first-minute goal before late strikes from Jiri Stajner, Nezmar again and Robert Neumann sent Liberec sailing through. Inter Milan survived a minor scare before knocking out AEK Athens with a 2-2 draw in Greece. Following a 3-1 win in the first leg, Inter trailed 2-1 on the night before Nicola Ventola settled their nerves on 58 minutes. Inter now face Valencia in a mouth-watering quarter final clash after the Spanish side also shared a 2-2 draw with Swiss side Servette to complete a 5-2 aggregate win.
